collective intelligence for collective progress. donate: cip.org/donate

We're hiring! Join us in making collective intelligence the obvious path - currently recruiting for two @collect_intel roles: Lead Product Engineer & Product Manager. cip.org/careers We're building the infrastructure that gives people across the globe meaningful input and agency into how AI systems are developed and governed. We combine large-scale deliberation, participatory evaluation, and institutional partnerships in a way no lab, regulator, or civil society organization can achieve alone. We're a small, high-leverage team backed by leading foundations + working with top AI labs and governments to ensure AI development expands democratic capacity rather than undermining it.

In a guest essay on our Substack, @OurSecureFuture share what they learned building the first public Women, Peace, & Security benchmark for AI, using Weval.org. Without explicit cues, every model missed key gender dimensions. open.substack.com/pub/collec…

What role should AI play in democracy? We asked 1,103 people across 69 countries. The core finding: it comes down to democratic surrender vs. democratic empowerment.

AI increasingly intermediates the information people receive & what actions are taken on their behalf. →9.5% would let AI attend a meeting in their place. →26.6% would let it represent their arguments. →30.6% would let it generate arguments for them.

People don't want AI to decide for them. But they do want it to help them decide. The question isn't whether AI enters our politics. It will. The question is whether it leads to democratic surrender or empowerment. Read our full blog at: blog.cip.org/p/people-want-t…

Work update: I've joined @AnthropicAI's alignment team, with the same mission as always: building for democratic, pluralistic futures in a world with superintelligence. Feels like we're really playing for keeps now. I’m excited that @JoalStein and @zarinahagnew will lead @collect_intel as I transition to board chair. They’ve done an incredible job since I stepped away a few months ago to support the OpenAI Foundation, and I’m glad to see convergence between all of this work. I feel lucky to have been in this space for long enough that, as I’ve moved around and CIP has grown, so much of the work, mission, and people have stayed continuous. That's not changing, and I'd love to keep collaborating - reach out to chat!

The CIP Research Fellowship has officially begun! We’re proud to announce our new fellows: Mariana Meireles & Julian Yocum, Sheza Munir, and Jessica Dai. These researchers will work on the following: * mapping probabilistic models of disagreement in AI-enabled deliberation * distinguishing between genuine versus surface consensus within our global sample * assessing what makes for high-quality public feedback for AI Capability research has thousands of people and billions of dollars behind it. The question of whose values those models carry has a few dozen. We’ve added four!

An ambitious proposal (but one that we could make real progress on) for giving the public a say in how we govern AI. From one of my favorite political scientists @landemore! Building on work from @saffronhuang @divyasiddarth @ThankYourNiceAI @collect_intel @Werdnamai @audreyt and many others. Lots of open questions still around institutional independence, checks and balances, including the non-western ai ecosystem, and how to avoid entrenching the leading labs.
“The enormous question of what AI is for cannot be answered in Washington or Beijing alone. On issues of this scale & importance, we owe people a say in what they're being both protected from & disrupted for.” —@landemore noemamag.com/how-to-give-eve…

@jasminewsun's piece in the @nytimes is right: an AI underclass is a choice, not destiny. But we need to know what economic futures people want and are willing to accept. With @windfalltrust, we asked 1,041 people across 64 countries through a deliberative, interactive dialogue, and the answers are more specific than the current policy debate assumes. Policymakers need to start planning now. People are already feeling these impacts. The social contract for the AI age still needs to be written, and the window to write it is closing.
