I always thought a guest WiFi network was dumb. After cracking into my tv like a walnut with nothing but WiFi I no longer think this You’ll get the 2.5ghz channel and you’ll like it
Having Claude build me a smart home Mac tool and my biggest takeaway is to never give anyone WiFi access to my home ever again

first spooktober project. detecting Crypt Keeper laugh and pulsing pumpkin light. Custom Tessel ( github.com/PatrickSt1991/tes… ) player build deployed on Samsung TV reporting video and play times to service which has subtitles and controls IKEA light tied to DIRIGERA hub

and it works, barring very minor timing differences in subtitles...

the most complicated part was getting proper subtitles that have audio descriptions like "HA HA HA HA HA HA!" or "[LAUGHING]", opensubtitles had them... tried using several speech to text models but they don't output that at all it seems? they only give real 'speech'..

lazy human: I'll just let ChatGPT rename these .srt files. over-achiever Sol: renamed files, ran vlc probe to check, checked encoding of subtitle files, compared video/audio codecs with what's supported by my tv, compared timestamps of last subtitle entry with length of video..

yeah...this new era... hearing @dhh mention omacut on @lexfridman podcast, "hey this seems nice", then "oh boo it's linux-only", well...not anymore, you can just do things (while enjoying late lunch at a trattoria on a mac and remoting into a win machine for testing) 😀 github.com/deathy/omacut-win…

I get it that commit message co-author started as marketing from Anthropic but I actually like it and enforce it for other models as well. maybe librarian mindset but N yeara in the future if some research says Opus 4.X always messed up validation of certain types of input I can give the newer models exact commits to check. Also I can see commit from Sol and know to ask Opus for review and vice-versa. It's not a bad thing, it's useful information and if you don't add it now you will not have it later. And you can't predict all future use-cases.

I mean in IT if someone comes at an interview now and they say they will not use AI generally (without any arguments or just moral arguments, see Linus's opinion on the topic) you just show them the door. quite different in other fields for now.

I already had an established perspective on colleagues before like colleague A prefers arrays over lists, colleague B over-abtracts. seeing a commit from colleague A but with model X changes my review mindset. Not necessarily better since the model might have other peculiarities than the person but good information to have.

wait don't all people have albums like these?
I noticed Tokyo has DECORATIVE MANHOLE COVERS. Different designs in each district. Thought it was cool. Took a photo. Week 2: Took photos of 5 different ones. Random guy approached me: "You collecting?" Me: Collecting what? Him: Manholes. Me: ...no? Him: disappointed, Oh. Thought you were one of us. Me: One of WHO? Him: walks away Month 2: Kept seeing the SAME GUY at different manholes across Tokyo. He'd show up. Take photos. Leave. Finally asked him: "What are you doing?" Him: There are 347 unique manhole designs in Tokyo. I have 289. Me: You're collecting MANHOLES? Him: We ALL are. Him: *shows me a LINE GROUP* "Tokyo Manhole Hunters" - 1,240 members. Month 3: Joined the group out of curiosity. They were SERIOUS. Member 1: "Found a rare Taito-ku cherry blossom cover today!" Member 2: "PHOTOS OR IT DIDN'T HAPPEN!" They had RANKINGS. COMPETITIONS. TRADING CARDS. Me: This is insane. Admin: This is HERITAGE PRESERVATION. Month 4: Got addicted. Started hunting manholes at 5 AM before work. Found a rare Meguro design from 1983. Posted in the group: CHAOS Admin: "WHERE?!" Me: "Not telling yet." Admin: "WE'LL FIND YOU." Month 5: They found me. Seven members showed up at the location at 6 AM. All taking photos. One guy CRYING. Him: I've been looking for this for 3 years! Me: It's a MANHOLE! Him: It's HISTORY! Month 8: Became top 10 in the rankings. Started getting SPONSORSHIPS. Company: "We'll pay you ¥50,000 to wear our camera strap while manhole hunting." Me: People WATCH manhole hunting?! Company: Your YouTube channel has 40,000 subscribers. Me: I HAVE A YOUTUBE CHANNEL?! Turns out the admin was posting my finds without telling me. Admin: You're our best hunter! Free promotion! Me: DELETE IT! Admin: It's making us all money! You get 40% of ad revenue! I'd made ¥340,000 WITHOUT KNOWING. Month 10: Quit my job. Became full-time manhole hunter. ¥600,000/month from YouTube, sponsorships, and selling "manhole location data." My parents: "What do you do for work?" Me: "Urban infrastructure documentation." Dad: "That sounds important!" Me: taking a photo of a sewer cover, "Very important." Present: Found 312 out of 347 designs. The remaining 35 are LEGENDARY. One hasn't been photographed since 2009. It's in a restricted area near the Imperial Palace. I'm planning a heist. Not really. But kind of. The group is WAITING. This is my life now.

I do have a feeling I'm one of few people who: use windows as my main machine + know my hardware and what to expect of it + have basic knowledge of profiling/heap dumps/etc.... we can do much better... yeah and listening to @cmuratori talks recently, do we need a PhD to not leak desktop window manager objects? ....
what am I even doing...
