resource ephemerality and the behavior, morphology, physiology animals use to deal with them. also leader of the best research team ever, prone to typos.
last in my collection of species portraits for now: this adorable #Phyllostomus ❤️🦇 by @LittleLeapers_ I am hoping to expand! So if you want to draw a Molossus, a Rousettus, a Tadarida or a common shrew or mole - reach out! Best to batichica.blsky.social#swansong#leaving
next up in my collections of #illustrations of my study species is the one that got me my PhD: #Lophostoma, my forever love, the most gentle bat out there. Juvenile male, beautifully rendered by the wonderful @LittleLeapers_
here‘s nr 3 of my collection of drawings of my study species: one of my first, since 2007 and to this day, though they‘re more @jenna_kohles now #noctilio. The species I did my first #groupforaging work with. Love love love them ❤️🦇😂 also by @GessingerGloria#sciart#Panabat
(4/4) and in her third chapter she really sat on the bats‘ shoulder to see how they fulfil their energetic needs in real life. You‘ll need to keep your eyes peeled for this one but let me say that much: making sperm is expensive!!
(2/4) her first chapter is a lab experiment where she discovered that common noctules can maintain extremely low #heartrates and oxygen consumption across temperatures from 0-30 degrees regardless of reproductive status. doi.org/10.1007/s00360-022-0…
When you think about foraging bats, to you imagine them flying 25km, crossing the sea to lick some nectar? Me neither? Our paper on how Panama spear-nosed bats do it differently is online at Animal Behaviour! doi.org/10.1016/j.anbehav.20…@MPI_animalbehav@teague_o@stri_panama
or another tree, this one in a paper on mammalian brain size evolution: doi.org/10.1126/sciadv.abe21… I could go on and on…but: don‘t hire him cause then he won‘t have time for our commissions 😇😂
catching bats in a zoo gives a special flavour to it all, soundscape is from African lions to amazonian parrots. Still the bats win #nyctalus#noctule#tracking#ICARUS
Take 5 min and report an online store selling bats! Sellers claim they find them dead or that they are bred. Both are lies. Bats are always sourced from the wild. My heart bleeds for this gorgeous #Hipposideros I reported today.
it‘s about the incredible bats of #BCI and what we have learned from them. Text is by Rachel Page, Marco Tschapka, @teague_o and yours truly, but it‘s dedicated to the legacy of Eli Kalko. A pioneer for tropical bat research and women in science who passed too soon😢
guess the publication date of our #bat book - it‘s perfect (and accidental). Buy a but less beer for #Halloween and treat yourself to the gorgeous pics of @zieglerphoto1 (it‘s up for preorder, hint hint) @stri_panama@MPI_animalbehav
for once it is not about individual reversible brain size (though I am sure they have that, too, like weasels), but the domestication effect. We breed animals to be stupid, domesticated animals have smaller brains, and when they become feral this is usually irreversible
today this paper came out: doi.org/10.1098/rsos.230463 and it makes me happy because the lead author is the student who did this for her bachelor, a young woman who will go far. The paper is on #mink brains and the fact that their size is reversible @MPI_animalbehav@animaltracking
better late than never when it comes to cake no? you publish, you bake is our tradition so I made an upside-down pie cause 🦇🦇 for this paper I weite with the amazing Rachel Page inly 6 months late 😂😇 doi.org/10.1016/j.cub.2022.1…@CurrentBiology
looking for portraits of the following bats: Eumops auripendulus, Eumops glaucinus, Molossus coibensis, Molossus currentium for a book on bats of BCI, The book is an hommage to Eli Kalko‘s work with photos by @zieglerphoto1 and will be amazing
dear #Nature this paper title is misleading, outdated and as it stands, wrong. Yes, Nipah is horrible. But luckily it‘s one of the few bat borne viruses we know to spill over based on scientific evidence so far. You contribute to the very damaging fear mongering with this
there's no end to how fascinating shrews are. I am amazed every day that they even survive a single day and yet they are so successful! And cute! #ShrewCrew#Sorex#climatechange
we x-rayed 50 years' worth of shrews for this. They were stored in giant vats, filled to the brim with dead animals and alcohol, untouched since decades. We're talking about in dead animals up to your armpits (special shout-out to Marion)
and then there‘s days like this ❤️🦇❤️ Here‘s a challenge: one of the seven #bars in my hand is a different species. He‘s a boy and we interrupted him mating (we were very sorry), do you know which one? @MPI_animalbehav@lara_keicher@jenna_kohles

deformation professionelle 😂 do y‘all (I was recently in Texas) see a romantic collection of decaying statues? I see a perfect #thyroptera roost 😂 (note I am in Germany and they‘re neotropical #bats) #discwingedbat#bat#Panama
What‘s your bucket list bat? I am obsessed with finding Lophostoma kalkoae, which was only recorded twice. Both times on Pipeline road in Panama and in EXCAVATED ANT NESTS! The other is Balionycteris maculata, which also excavates ant and termite nests.
#happysad : Angi has finished her bachelor thesis on the cognitive compromise #DehnelsPhenomenon causes in #shrews. When you brain shrinks in winter they solve an associative learning task less well. All the best for your next step, Angi, we'll miss you #shrewcrew@cecibaldons
