On my 16th birthday, my dad gave me a red bandana. He told me the story of a man named Welles Crowther who was on the 74th floor of the World Trade Center when the planes hit on 9/11. When everyone else ran down, he ran up. Welles found survivors on the 78th floor, put the most injured woman on his back, and led the rest down the stairs to safety. After they were safe, he ran back up some unknown number of times. In the days after 9/11, survivors kept talking about "the man in the red bandana" who saved them. No one knew who he was. As the NYT began to publish some of these stories, his family found them and knew immediately it was Welles. When Welles was 6, his dad gave him a red bandana that he carried with him ever since. When he was 16, he became a volunteer firefighter. After his death, his dad found a partially-complete FDNY job application in his apartment. Six months after 9/11, Welles's body was found at Ground Zero alongside dozens of FDNY firefighters at the makeshift command center they assembled in the lobby of the South Tower before it collapsed. If you stop by the 9/11 memorial in NYC, you'll still find a red bandana at Welles' name.

There is much to consider around AI in education, but these bans have nothing to do with pedagogy. It's much simpler: LLM's don't pay union dues.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said children need their teachers and human connection in order to learn and grow, as he announced a one-year ban on generative AI for students in preschool through eighth grade starting this school year

Dr. Shack founded the very first Primer. She started it in Liberty City, 15 minutes north of Miami, where she’d been a longtime teacher and Assistant Principal. It’s a neighborhood of 7,000 kids whose parents are in a never-ending fighting for better schools. She was one of the earliest believers in our model. She took a bet on me, the team, and trusted us enough to bring 100+ students from her community that she knew and loved. We now have Primers all over many states (and I love them all!), but visiting Shack and her Liberty City crew will always hit a bit different.

Alternatively, send your kid to Primer and you'll know precisely what they learned each day and what questions to ask before they even jump in the car.

This is actually one of the coolest, most pro-family, most good-culture thing a company can offer as a perk In-house on-site microschool for company families The future of education model innovation is so so bright
Thanks to new legislation, it's now possible for companies in Florida to offer a free, K-8 Primer on-site for their employees. 100% free for the company, 100% free private school for employees. We'll be piloting this with a few companies soon — DM's open or r@primer.com

I originally met Adam 2 years ago. His reason for wanting to launch a Primer was simple: “I realized that I love teaching, but I hate being a teacher in the big system.” This week he launched Primer Babcock Ranch in Southwest Florida. The kids are so lucky to have him.

In a few hours, hallways at Primers across Florida, Arizona, Texas, and Arizona will be full of students for the first time. Nothing quite like the first day of school. Still gets me every time.

Another morning where the topic du jour on here is dunking on a company outcome the commentariat has deemed subpar. Dunking on those in the arena for likes is bad for your soul. Life is far more fun if you simply decide to relentlessly side with the builders.

This job will be awesome for someone because a) you’ll get to save kids from the clutches of public school and b) you’ll get to work with @delk
There's a new, under-the-radar federal program that will unlock billions of dollars for K-12 school choice on January 1st. I'm hiring a leader to own this for Primer — equal parts GTM, ops, legal, marketing & BD. Reports directly to me. Come save the next generation. DM's open.
