Atlanta, GA
In the 23 minutes Cam Boozer and Zach Edey shared the floor together last night, MEM held GSW to: 33% at the rim (4/12) just 4 OREBs on 41 FGA 43.9 eFG% overall while scoring 1.083 PPP in the HC with a 42.9 OREB%. a preview of decades of dominance
Grizzlies walking down a small ball Warriors lineup with a 17-0 run, Cam & Edey controlling the paint and Boozer draining the go ahead on a mismatch is so perfectly emblematic of the force/mass/physicality/playmaking advantage they’ll have over every team in the league

I asked Quin Snyder about some of the tradeoffs that come with Dyson covering checking off-ball players (KD tonight) he discussed how they have multiple options at POA and how HOU can operate with multiple handlers to circumvent certain matchups (keeping Durant as a spacer)
it’s matchups like this where not having a true wing-sized defender puts the Hawks (especially the starting lineup) in a tough position Dyson having to face guard a movement shooter suppresses his defensive playmaking, prevents him from roaming & cleaning up any lapses, etc.

thought ATL would force a ton of TOs tonight with FVV out, the Rockets have a done a better job using KD in a primarily off-ball role this season, he's starting almost every poss in the corner still only 2.5 games into the season but he's at his lowest PNR volume since 2011

he usually draws the toughest assignments itl of course but can provide a lot more value deterring teams from running offense through an on-ball player and forcing TOs than he can chasing KD around a pindown

closest thing they’ve got is Dort, defense was stronger in the 10 possessions they shared the floor together but HOU is too good to try and run that pairing a ton

Went through some data and film in the opener. In this one we look at Philly's cross-match tactic that played out through many kinds of possessions (Post Up, P&R etc). Game one delivered takeaways as valuable as any you’ll find in this season Link: shaxnba.substack.com/p/long-…

Atlanta is leaning into their handoff game more than ever, expect to see a ton of possessions where they flow through a trailing big, enter the ball to the pinch post, etc. with so many handlers who can screen + pass & shoot on the move, they’re going to be flying around
The Hawks led the NBA in PTS Added on Handoffs this preseason, running DHOs at the 2nd highest rate in Quin Synder's tenure. ATL mixes in Delay, Pinch & Pistol to vacate corners and love to advance the ball early to run DHOs w/ Dyson/Dort to punish defenses for sagging.

teammates shot 24% from the floor and angel goes for 30 on 72 TS% feasted in transition as a finisher, passer & rebounder which helped keep the Dream from having to try and score vs the Valk’s HC defense that suffocated them in Game 1 just a special special performance
