I think the problem a lot of people have with AI agents is that if you accept the code they generate, the quality level of the codebase is hard to prioritise. Yes, we shipped slop in some places, but it was often a deliberate decision on where it was OK to do
my argument is that all code is slop. slop is simply a slur and not a real objective definition. everyone considers code they wrote good and what others wrote that they don’t understand slop
it’s not a useful term for a true discussion on the topic. I’d maybe ask you to define what you mean when you say slop

This is a good reminder to anyone going to the gym - a smith machine may actually be more dangerous than a barbell squat, unless it has hard stops you can adjust. If you don't lock it in time, you may be unable to escape from under the bar before it pins you down.

While I agree there are situations where changing the architecture improves performance much more than a language switch, I think "almost never" is a big exaggeration and it kinda ignores the fact that often language rewrites are much simpler than architecture changes
People rewrite in Rust or Go and claim that as the reason for huge performance gains, at face value that's cool but when looking at what actually makes stuff faster it's almost never the language. A small thread.

They used Fast API, so what could be the gain, you might ask. These were mostly GPU based apps, so they were a thin wrapper over an inference engine. Typically one or two endpoints. No architecture change and in some cases it allowed dropping 20% of servers. It might not sound...
