On Friday, I'm recording a pod on repowering: replacing solar panels & batteries nearing the end of their lives with new, more efficient ones. A new report claims it could unlock 67 & 92 GW of solar & battery capacity respectively by 2040, with no new land needed!

Today on Volts: @OctopusEnergy is the biggest retail energy provider in the UK, where it coordinates its customers EVs & batteries into a giant virtual power plant. Its attempts to replicate that success in the US have been...slow going, thanks to the unwieldy US utility system.
I talk with CEO @nchaset about Octopus's efforts in Texas, its recent acquisition of @Uplight, and the future of distributed energy in the US.

On Wed., I'm talking with ... everyone's favorite! ... a data center developer. Rowan is a newish company trying to work with communities to build data centers sustainably, focused on net-zero targets, jobs, environmental impact, community benefits, etc.

Today on Volts: while visiting Denmark, I talked with Kristian Jensen--former gov't minister, now head of the cleantech trade association--about the country's energy system. District heating, biomass, EVs, solar backlash, municipally owned utilities, & more. Inspiring stuff!

Today on Volts: I talk with @matt_traldi, CEO of Greenlight America. It's a nonprofit with a simple mission: find the local meetings where the fate of clean energy projects is being decided & rally supporters to attend. Incredible growth & impact since we last talked!

Last week bipartisan Senate negotiators unveiled the most ambitious and serious permitting reform proposal in recent memory.
It was a real pleasure to join @drvolts for a (thorough!) unpacking of what's in bill and why people should care.

On Monday, I'm recording a podcast with @tommatzzie, chair of the Invest in Tomorrow Coalition PAC. It has been spending big on elections & has successfully taken out a few clean-energy opponents.

Can’t recommend this one enough. Dan is one of the most knowledgeable people on the planet about this subject, and also one of the clearest thinkers. Give it a listen.
Today on Volts: the new federal permitting bill is 417 pages long. Some people love it, some hate it, some are confused. With @DanielPalken, I methodically walk through why it's happening, what exactly is in it, & the political rationale for doing it now.

Listen to @drvolts great Volts pod with @DanielPalken on the permitting reform bill, then join me live with questions for Palken Monday at 11am ET! Lots of ways to watch below 1/2

Just got done listening to what has to be the longest @drvolts podcast in the catalogue and loved every minute! Shout out to David & @DanielPalken for an incredibly helpful, in-depth walkthrough of all the key elements in the important #BAAJA bill before Congress. Let’s go! ⚡️

If you want to understand the big permitting reform bill working it's way forward in Congress, you'd have a hard time finding a better comprehensive conversation than this one. Give it a listen.

On Monday, I'm recording a podcast with @sdamico, the head of @ImpulseLabs (which makes those dreamy high-end induction cooktops) & co-author of the influential "Electric Slide" piece arguing that the future belongs to whoever dominates electricity.
What should I ask him?

Spend two hours today listening to the smartest person I know on permitting (@DanielPalken) talk with @drvolts about why we should pass BAAJA. Rude that it’s longer than my pod with Dave, but fine.

This one is extremely long and pretty technical. There are chapter headings if you want to jump around to the parts that interest you. Daniel & I apologize: like Blaise Pascal said, "I have made this longer than usual because I have not had time to make it shorter."
On Wednesday I am recording a podcast on the hot subject of the moment, PERMITTING REFORM, with @DanielPalken of Arnold Ventures. There is, to say the least, much to discuss.
What are your big questions? What do you want clarity on? What are your worries/fears/hopes? Hit me.
If, say, theoretically, Daniel and I recorded a 3 hour podcast on permitting reform, how many listeners do you think that would garner? Meaningfully more than zero?
"Every year that we wait and don’t remove pollution from communities, that is costing people in their lives. And so speed is a progressive value in my book. I think we have to build institutions that can move a lot faster."
So great to record this episode with @drvolts at Town Hall Seattle. Check it out!
Today on Volts: On Sep. 14, at Seattle's Town Hall, I spoke with policy wonk @leahstokes about her new book The Carbon Wave, which weaves together the story of the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act with her personal story of a risky pregnancy. It's gripping! We had a blast.
