Next month, @timdugganbooks will publish my big climate book, The Uninhabitable Earth, in which I try to take a very broad, and very long, view of the state of the climate crisis and all the ways it promises to transform how we live on this planet—all of us. (1/x)
The global expansion of industrialized meat production is by far the biggest threat to biodiversity, the environment, and traditional foodways.

POLITICO: Google co-founder Sergey Brin has spent 40 times what he’s invested in politics in the previous 20 years trying to defeat California’s proposed billionaire tax
23% chance the billionaire wealth tax passes
I've been saying this for a while - regardless of where voters stand on trans rights they're mainly just sick of hearing about it and to the extent it has any impact on elections it's mainly a contest of who they blame for it
“The instrument changes were partly motivated by a push to narrow the satellites’ applicability to weather forecasting, rather than conducting climate research as well. Among the instruments that were nixed: a tool to monitor air quality, including hourly monitoring of wildfire smoke; as well as one meant to study water quality and ocean currents, along with harmful algae blooms.”
The Trump administration’s cuts to weather satellites will set the country back nearly a decade, experts say. The loss of data used to observe, forecast and research extreme weather could prevent the US from making major advances in weather prediction in the coming years. cnn.it/4k6eD4o
High schoolers, students: the twilight of macronism
Hundreds of thousands of young people work hard to earn their high school diplomas, but there is nothing planned to welcome them into higher education

Kind of crazy that our miraculous planet, one modulated by the very flow of carbon between different reservoirs (the mantle, atmosphere, oceans, life, and the crust) is currently undergoing one of the most profound derangements of its carbon cycle in hundreds of millions of years
FT: In Brazil, "almost 2mn people, mostly men, now work full-time for transport or delivery apps — around 2 per cent of the workforce — with driver numbers climbing 37 per cent in three years, according to government research. The most common reason people work for the apps is that they could not find another job."
The FT notes that in Brazil, the transport and delivery app economy has become a kind of unemployment insurance scheme, although one with declining "benefits".
The same is true in China. It is hard to get good data, but the best estimates are that 12% of China's working population works in the gig economy, of which 7% work in the transport and delivery app economy – i.e. three to four times the share in Brazil.

📊 The 2016 Brexit electorate no longer exists.
Peter Kellner has updated the sums using YouGov and ONS data.
Since 2016:
🔹 Around 3.8m Leave voters have died, against 2.1m Remain voters.
🔹 Around 7m new voters have reached voting age, overwhelmingly pro-European.
🔹 Around 5m voters have changed their minds 👉roughly three-quarters of them moving from Leave to Rejoin.
His estimate of how Britain would vote now:
🇪🇺 REJOIN: 20.0m 👉 63%
🇬🇧 STAY OUT: 11.8m 👉 37%
A majority of almost 9 million.
Brexit happened. Britain has lived with it for a decade.
But democracy does not freeze the electorate in 2016 forever.
The question is what Britain wants now not what it indicated in 2016.
📊 The Brexit majority hasn’t just slipped 👉it’s vanished. Completely.
This chart from Peter Kellner/YouGov shows:
• 5 million 2016 voters have died
• New young voters back Rejoin by 5:1
• 29% of Leave voters now want to rejoin
• Net result: Rejoin 19.8m vs Stay Out 11.7m
➡️ An 8 MILLION majority for Rejoin.
Britain is now a pro-EU country.
The only people keeping Brexit alive are politicians who benefit from the damage.

Some of y’all, if you were white and alive in the 1700s, would’ve been like, “Why would y’all throw all that tea into the harbor? What is that supposed to solve? 🥺🥺”
"The number of marine animals plummeted by about 60% in the years following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion...and those populations haven’t come close to recovering, the study found."
Number of children born to women ages 40-44.
There were big changes between 1980 and 1990 (between women born in the late 1930s and those born in the late 1940s)-- then, mostly stable.
