My new book, Co-Existence, is out today. It is a guide to how to live & work in a world where AI is sometimes, but not always, better than you. (And, for the release, I worked with Opus 5.5 to make a quite interesting experience for the book's website: co-existence.ai/)

Ethan's first book was about AI as chatbots, this one is all about agents. I was lucky enough to get an early copy. If you're interested in agentic AI, get this book. Ethan talks to all the labs, is a critical early tester of the models, and was super early on agentic AI. Hes also an incredible writer, this book was a pleasure to read and learn from.

I wrote about the exponential curve of the last 30 months of AI development: oneusefulthing.org/p/30-mont… And I asked Opus 5.5 to create the ultimate response to the test I use for all AI image generation models (make a picture of "an otter on a plane using wifi"), it made this video

This was a great conversation!
New pod: 'YOU'RE NOT AGI-PILLED ENOUGH' I asked @emollick to tell me what I'm getting wrong about AI. We also talked about: - why so many experts keep underrating the rate of progress for model capabilities - why so many experts keep *overrating* how rapidly powerful AI will change the macroeconomy - why the answer to the previous question starts with "O-rings and garbage cans" - the sociology of AI swarms - the paradoxes of AI use (or: 'every technological augmentation is also an amputation,' per McLuhan) - the end of prompting (or: what happens if personal AI agents get so good at anticipating our needs that humans, once the prompter, become the prompted) - 2027 predictions and ... his excellent new book CO-EXISTENCE piped.video/watch?v=zthE5Oa8…

Its not a new idea, but the lack of giant eccentric monumental architecture in Silicon Valley is a shame. You have lots of weird people with too much money, and yet only one place at the level of a solid midwestern oddball tourist attraction, and that was started in the 1880s.

Given the acceleration Anthropic is reporting in coding, it is amazing that you still cannot change your email address in Claude and the official advice is that if you need to change your email the only way to do that is delete your account.

Update:
Replying to @emollick
Okay, as expected, this isn't something I can quickly fix between meetings but we all agree that it's a pretty poor experience

New Claude Projects* is a nice interface for multi-agent work. It does a good job with having a user-facing coordinator model and independent agents running threads that pass messages around. Takes some fiddling but quite powerful. * Same name but no relation to old Projects🤪

There's nothing people deep in AI psychosis love more than a dashboard

Multiplayer AI needs to move past the group chat phase. Chats are chaotic, everyone sees everything (creating social & management issues), and they're bad for long projects. Worse, they keep AI trapped inside existing teams, when its real promise is working & helping across them.

There are many more options for multiplayer, but they require serious experimental with organizational form, requiring more effort than just adding AI to existing chat, but also making them into a better strategic moat rather than a generic capability.

Writing good STATA code was very important for my academic career. It looks like that skill is largely becoming obsolete. (Also take this is as a notice to academics who still think of AI in terms of chatbots, not agents, that a lot has changed in a year) cepr.org/voxeu/columns/letti…

I hate this slide every time it comes up, and now from CSAIL This has been false since before the slide was made. Automated systems make management decisions all the time (trading, logistics, customer service, insurance) & pretending they don't actually launders responsibility.
An IBM slide from 1979.

It is especially rich coming from MIT and IBM, as both were the key to SAGE 20 years before this, an automated system that automatically assigned interceptors and missiles against incoming aircraft. Literally letting a computer make management decisions. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semi-A…

Not an anti-MIT thing (I am an alumni) but it is a weird post since CSAIL faculty does tons of work on automated decision making. Better to emphasize all their work on ensuring accountability & alignment given that machines are, indeed, making more and more management decisions

Developers are going to be a small part of total token usage over time, as the internal stats on usage at OpenAI and Anthropic both show. And for long-running high value tasks in areas where verification is harder, the benefits for higher "intelligence" models are quite large.
OpenAI, Anthropic and other leading AI labs face a growing challenge: Better models aren't necessarily attracting more usage. A 10-point intelligence advantage now earns just 20% more developer traffic, down from nearly 69% in late 2025. Full story: thein.fo/4hGJ9jY

This doesn’t seem to be a very robust strategy in the era of AIs that can use your computer on your behalf.
notice.. > Delta is blocking AI agents from booking flights > JPMorgan Chase and Charles Schwab block agents from accessing accounts > Yelp requires paid data licensing for agents > Amazon has blocked Grok bot and other shopping agents. the internet is starting to block AI agents that were supposed to do everything for us

You don't want to give today's agents access to control your bank account, by the way, given how little we know about agentic security & prompt injection. But coming up with a secure way to work with agents is probably going to better for everyone in the long run than just a ban
