I RAN AWAY ON MY WEDDING NIGHT, AND I KNOW MY HUSBAND WILL NEVER FORGIVE ME FOR WHAT I DID.
I (28F) had been in a relationship with my boyfriend for almost four years. To everyone around us, we were the perfect couple. He was financially supportive, generous and always willing to help whenever I needed something.
But behind closed doors, things were completely different.
He was controlling, possessive and emotionally manipulative. He constantly made me feel guilty whenever I disagreed with him. Whenever we had an argument, he would remind me of everything he had done for me and make me feel like I owed him my entire life.
I had tried to leave the relationship several times, but each time I remembered his sacrifices, financial support and the promises he made about changing.
Eventually, he proposed.
I wasn't ready to marry him, but I felt trapped by everything he had done for me. I couldn't bring myself to say no, especially with both families already involved.
So, I accepted.
As the wedding preparations continued, I became increasingly unhappy. I smiled for photographs, attended family meetings and pretended to be excited, even though deep down, I knew I was making a terrible mistake.
The wedding day finally arrived.
I wore my wedding dress, smiled at the guests and exchanged vows with a man I wasn't sure I wanted to spend the rest of my life with.
After the reception, we checked into a hotel.
Around midnight, while I was preparing for the night, my phone suddenly rang.
It was my best friend.
Friend: "Have you made up your mind?"
Me: "I don't know. I'm scared."
Friend: "You can't keep living like this. You know you don't want this marriage."
I looked at myself in the mirror, still wearing my wedding outfit.
For several minutes, I couldn't say anything.
Then I made a decision.
I picked up my handbag, grabbed my phone and quietly walked out of the hotel room while my husband was in the bathroom.
I knew he would call me. I knew both families would be furious. But I couldn't bring myself to spend the rest of my life in a marriage I never truly wanted.
I got into my friend's car, and we drove away.
My phone started ringing almost immediately.
It was my husband.
I couldn't answer.
He called again and again, but I kept staring at the screen.
By morning, I had received dozens of missed calls and messages from his family.
Then my phone rang again.
This time, it was my mother.
Mother: "Where are you? Do you understand what you've done to this family?"
Me: "Mum, I'm sorry. But I couldn't do it anymore."
Mother: "After everything he has done for you? After all the money he spent on this wedding?"
I started crying.
Me: "Does everything he did for me mean I have to sacrifice the rest of my life? I never wanted this marriage, Mum."
There was silence.
Then she said something I wasn't expecting.
Mother: "Your husband is here with us. He has something to tell you."
I froze.
A few seconds later, I heard his voice on the phone.
Husband: "So, after everything I've done for you, this is how you repay me?"
I couldn't speak.
Then he continued:
"There's something you don't know about what happened yesterday. And I think you owe me an explanation too."
I sat quietly, wondering what he could possibly mean.
That was when I realized the story wasn't over yet.
On our wedding night, I was in the bathroom preparing to spend my first intimate night with my new wife when her phone rang.
She answered, listened for a few seconds, then suddenly grabbed her handbag.
Me: “Baby, where are you going? It's almost midnight.”
Wife: “I need to take care of something. I'll be back soon.”
Me: “Tonight? It's our wedding night!”
Wife: “Please, don't start. I'll explain later.”
Before I could ask another question, she walked out.
I wasn't too bothered at first. She was my wife, and I believed she had a good reason to leave.
When I came out of the bathroom, I waited for about twenty minutes before calling her.
No answer.
I called again. Nothing.
Me: “Baby, pick up. Where are you?”
After several unanswered calls, I went downstairs to speak to the hotel receptionist.
Me: “Excuse me, has my wife come through here? She left our room about twenty minutes ago.”
Receptionist: “I'm sorry, sir. I haven't seen her.”
Me: “Are you sure? She's wearing a white dress, and she has a small handbag.”
Receptionist: “I'm sure, sir.”
I returned to the room and sat on the edge of the bed, staring at our wedding rings.
I tried calling her again until my phone battery began running low.
Morning came, and she still hadn't returned.
I hadn't slept for a single minute when my phone suddenly rang.
It was an unknown number.
