I can’t believe I’m holding this! It’s the completion of a six-year project that really spans my adult life — and 80 years of Chinese history, from Mao to Xi. I tell the story of modern China through a dramatic family saga and contemporary reporting. Learn more and order here: penguinrandomhouse.com/books…

I was at a dinner in DC last week where the Blob came up many times. Appropriate for Halloween.
The week in the Blob —@dandrezner says it no longer exists
—Henry Farrell counters that it exists because everyone in Washington believes it does
—@realvanjackson calls it the ruling class, and as a former card-carrying member he would know —@tcambanis forecasts the end of its monopoly after the war on Iran
—My @nybooks essay: it survives by absorbing whatever it needs, Trump's people included

Friends have been asking me all weekend what I think will happen on Tuesday. I’ve told them I have no special insight into America’s many discrete electorates. Now I’ll point them to this, with the usual caveats about polls these days.

The weave has gotten weavier. Our review found that Trump at 80 is more long-winded, more profane, more absolutist and more rambling than when he ran a decade ago. And even for a norm-breaker, he seems more willing to say things no other president would. @dylfreed nytimes.com/2026/11/01/us/po…

It’ll be interesting to see what happens with this after the midterm elections next week.
The American people deserve answers about why the Trump Administration is harboring an election denier and fraudster.  @RepDinaTitus and I are leading a probe into how the State Department helped Flávio Bolsonaro flee Brazil and why he was granted a U.S. visa.

When AI comes for Lao Gan Ma, you know Skynet is right around the corner
Rumors that chili maker Lao Gan Ma laid off 500+ workers due to AI have gone viral in China. Beneath Beijing’s positive messaging, many ordinary Chinese people are worried about AI and jobs. Lao Gan Ma recently touted a new AI-powered chili inspection system that uses high-speed industrial cameras that significantly outperform manual inspection. A stat about the company using this AI system to reduce human inspectors from 600 to 48 went viral on Chinese social media. The iconic, family-run company pushed back. But if you look at the data, the company has reduced headcount from 2,912 to 740 in the past few years while earning record revenues. Original story: m.jiemian.com/article/152425…
