"Most ships in legend or fiction are, from this point of view, like the Nautilus, the theme of a cherished seclusion, for it is enough to present the ship as the habitat of man, for man immediately to organize there the enjoyment of a round, smooth universe, of which, in addition

so funny how much of gibson's vision of the future in neuromancer is coming true but in the exact opposite way he imagined it. the way he denigrates china has aged disastrously to the point of comedy, if it weren't for how racist it is

there are girls that do this with star trek. some of them follow me even
a buddy in college, throughout college (4yrs) exclusively watched The Office as a way to date. He would match with girls (tinder or school) and tell them over and over again that he’s “never seen it” and the opening dates with these girls would just be watching the office

saying fiction doesn't affect reality is like saying a prism doesn't affect light: fiction is fragments of reality refracted through the mind of a writer. there's always truth in it; sometimes, the truth is "i am a liar", which is often the case with much of what we call history
The "fiction doesn't affect reality" argument never made sense to me. Fiction has inspired people to do some great things & improve themselves as people. Fiction has changed people's perception of the world. If fiction doesnt affect reality, the world wouldnt be the same.

i think no matter which way you slice it this movie is basically about how capitalism subjects people to such intense alienation that whether or not it's real doesn't matter. the movie would still end the same way
American Psycho wouldn’t work without the revelation that the cartoonish slasher violence is only a fantasy that Bateman believes in order to convince himself that he’s an interesting person.

i also think it's a little disturbing when they use the headline of a barthes essay that is chiefly about emancipating the reader to justify why they're doing stuff to their manuscript that makes it nightmarishly annoying for even an editor to read, let alone the average person

nevermind accessibility. there was a very brief period after the proliferation of the printing press where some books were published fully italicized. the fact that doesn't really happen anymore should tell you something about what you're doing to your text by overusing them

it has to be said that there is something inherently anti-social about the way some people approach writing fanfic, because many of the suggestions you find in style guides and general wisdom they take pride in disregarding exist in consideration of the reader, not the writer

"In some ways, you're even worse than the Borg. At least they tell you about their plans for assimilation. You're more insidious: you assimilate people, and they don't even know it."
Older I get the more I perceive that as a mirror for his role in Starfleet. He was always such a happy company man and realized during the Maquis storylines that he was a part of a collective that had shaped his free will without him realizing it.

"opinions" like this aren't real. i don't mean that they're insincere or driven by outrage. there is actually no opinion being stated, here; no preferences are being expressed that would qualify as taste, and especially not good taste. it's just a weak man saying he hates women
Just rewatched Dune and MAN, I forgot how much of a drag Chani is. Just scene after scene of pouting and scowling while Paul unites her people and heroically leads them to victory over the outworlders that have plagued them for centuries. Truly the wettest of blankets.

a translation "destroys" a text, yes. you cannot separate a text from its cultural context and the language it emerged from without replacing those symbols with ones disconnected from the cultural tissues of the original. this completely changes how the text can be interpreted
lowkey agree but please don't do translation a disservice like this. a translation is a transformation and that doesn't inherently mean destruction. once again: i truly understand and share the sentiment, but translation is its own beautiful art.

walter benjamin: one must consider the "aura" of art. the patina. the broken limbs of a sculpture. the puke which was once in the puke bowl. to remove the puke, to clean the bowl, like a lucky coin, is to strip it of its aura, then it becomes just another bowl... which it is.
new discourse is being started that you could never imagine starting in a million years
