Here’s the first talk we’re publishing from our first inaugural Kinetic conference this year. Em from WORC presented on the current state of mechanical engineering software and where it’s going.

After 2+ years in the robotics data space, we are shutting @Eidon_AI down. The thesis was right. But the business is brutally hard. We close this chapter by open-sourcing everything we built and sharing lessons for anyone venturing into the space.

Robotics Data is a Broken Business

A technical bottleneck does not necessarily imply a good business. We recently shut down @eidon_ai after 2+ years in the data space. We started in early 2024 with a gamified multimodal data collection

Replace “kids” with “engineers” and the advice holds up just as well. Expose your kids to a lot of things early, and then help them go as deep as they’re able to go on the things that excite them the most. It doesn’t matter what those things are; cultivating curiosity and depth is the point.

Robotics companies have all accepted The Bitter Lesson and we now see awesome demos, but most have no idea about The Brittle Lesson and boy are they in for a surprise when trying to productize.

Love my friends at figure, but failing half the time is not “doing real useful work.” See the 237/420 success rate below taken from the blog. Doing useful work = generalization + reliability.
The holy grail for robotics is being able to generalize: doing work in unseen places We rented 30 homes in the Bay Area and are doing tasks without any new training

More free DFM Education! This time for sheet metal. @hardwarefyi was lucky enough to work with @DrafterInc to make this free guide. Sheet metal has a lot of nuances that easily trip up the most senior engineer and have the ability to 10X your part cost with small overlooked details. This guide covers: •Typical sheet metal processes •K-Factor and how to calculate bend sizes •Rules for cuts, bend reliefs and hole sizing •Stiffening •Grain direction •And so much more!!

If you ever find yourself looking for cheap equipment, there’s an industrial equivalent of eBay called BidSpotter, where you can buy nearly any machine tool — or in special auctions an electric semi-truck from the now bankrupt Nikola Motors.

Grid operators publish real-time generation by source on sites like GridStatus which makes the U.S. grid easier to follow. One thing you might not know: California’s battery fleet grew from 500 MW in 2018 to ~16,000 MW in 2025, where solar now covers most midday demand.

Part IV keeps the manifesto style but trades product steps for broad rhetoric: AI, humanoid robots, and “sustainable abundance.”

A lesser-known manufacturing technique worth knowing: impact extrusion forms hollow metal parts in a single high-speed stroke, and was used to produce the aluminum shell of the ‘trashcan’ Mac Pro.
