It was.
In 2018, the media was attacking Nicki Minaj.
In 2026, Nicki Minaj is attacking the media.
In 2018, Nicki was literally hated for the crime of having been successful for too long. Nobody even bothered to articulate a legitimate grievance against her.
People were still riding the high of that 2017 diss track, and the second another female rapper started gaining traction, they saw an opportunity to get rid of Nicki. It was pure success fatigue. What do you think all that “let other girls shine” and “share your spotlight with other girls” rhetoric was really about?
People in the industry were openly bragging about blackballing her from radio, throwing their support behind who they saw as her competition, and even running campaigns about doing it “for the culture.” Celebrities, brands, media outlets, everybody wanted to participate. There was almost a collective enthusiasm for seeing this woman humiliated.
It didn’t even require a justification. People weren’t demanding accountability for anything lol. They simply wanted her gone, and the emergence of another successful female rapper gave them the perfect excuse to pursue it. 2018 is literally when the term “hate train” got popularized.
This time, Nicki is in control of her own narrative. She’s the one provoking these people, dragging them, and then mocking them when they inevitably take the bait. She’s making connections in political circles, cultivating relationships outside the music industry, and building an entirely new audience beyond her already loyal fanbase.
The outrage might feel like a lot because she’s antagonizing people whose entire political identity revolves around their hatred of Trump, and the media loves to amplify those voices. So you end up seeing a lot of people joining in for social media validation because they saw someone else get thousands of likes for dragging Nicki.
Let one of her songs or verses start trending tomorrow, and watch how quickly those same people jump on the trend, and how fast twitter starts coping over whichever song becomes a challenge or a trend.
They jump on the anti-Nicki bandwagon for the same reason they jump on Nicki trends and challenges every time she goes viral.
People seriously underestimate how much of what passes for public outrage is just social conformity.
A lot of these people aren’t nearly as passionate about the things they profess to care about as they are about receiving the approval of everyone else who claims to care. Leftism as a whole is literally built mostly on mob mentality.
