"lacks something fundamental that makes others human" -forbes. | voted most trustworthy tech news source of 1898

Denver, CO
i’m only really just now updating to 3sum being subquadratic and i think the reason it’s shaken me so badly is it proves that algorithmic space is densely populated with alien solutions that our brains are fundamentally ill-equipped to find. there’s a twelve foot tall man in the corner of our house that none of us can see.

I’m not sure how he’s planning on doing this.
Trevor Milton pricing the Syberjet SJ36 at $14M doing NY to LA nonstop with a projected operating cost of $30,000. A light jet, but at midsize performance.

Today, we launched Max Sphero 1.0 We better calibrated Max's orbness, and we now show this orb, indicating our affinity for spheres which is something we are very certain about.
Today, we launched Pangram 4.1. We better calibrated Pangram's confidence, and we now show this tooltip indicating an AI range for documents we are less certain about.

i think i’ve argued with melinda b chu on main before but she’s objectively correct. the citrini article, to me, proves that anthropic doesn’t have a Magic Sauce That Solves Biology. they’ve got a fast dry lab.
I’m just looking out for the retail investors. @anthropicai is not on track to have 1 drug in humans in 5 years and def not to cure most diseases in 5-10 years according to @DarioAmodei ‘s predictions. This is only 3rd post about Anthropic wet lab “success” in 3 months (mini-binders, non-CRISPR and now non-anti-venom) in 2 months and they didn’t even use their prized wet lab (which is no different than my rented space); they just used CROs like anyone else.

Obvs happens but nice to see it so boastfully laid out Watch Wall Streeters hop over Anthropic’s biosecurity guardrail with ease bc they’re bros, while blithely admitting they don’t have ANY of the biosecurity measures required for rank and file bio researchers doing real work
🦂 This was a very fun collaboration with the team @citrini! Thank you to @TwistBioscience and @adaptyvbio for the rapid turnaround on experimental validation and to Susana Vázquez Torres (@CNIOStopCancer), Tim Jenkins (@DTUtweet ), and Dan Bedinger (@carterra_bio) for their thoughtful review. people say “normies don’t understand they can just make any app they want” figure out what apps they want and make it for them :3 my dot has been basically relentlessly improving this for days with feedback from the ‘ol ball and chain. now it works for arbitrary sweaters! it has yarn packs! it uses a segmentation model! it is so much fun to hear my partner wistfully say “it’d be nice if it could do this” and just be like “okay gimme a few hours.” i mean it! now she can preview any knitting project and see how it’d look with any combination of yarns and colors :D if this is supposed to be the era of custom software, start making apps as gifts for the people you love. stop making slop and start making something beautiful and real. yarnwife.kukas.me/
ok so this is my favorite thing ive done with dots so far my partner couldnt decide what colors to pick for a sweater, so i made a little app that visualizes any combination of colors. and she can even import pictures of yarn from the yarn website :D yarnwife.eelheir.chatgpt.sit…

CONTEXT: he runs a company that rents out compute
tried dsv4.1-flash-1017 abliterated just now & feel sick to my stomach. for context, "abliterated" models have the weights responsible for making the base version refuse illegal requests removed. you can ask them to help with things like hacking or violence & they'll just comply. they make it trivial to hack businesses running old software. e.g. getting guest data for a motel with some old asp site. abliterated models have a catch-22 in that the only way to harden your systems against them is to use them to run penetration tests against yourself. in theory, this sounds similar to buying a gun to defend against others who own guns, but it's different in practice since there's a 100% chance that you're going to use the abliterated model to protect yourself whereas there are low odds that you'll actually use the gun. when you point the abliterated gun at your own infra, who knows what it's going to do? it could just as easily hack you & exfiltrate data as it could protect you. most users aren't going to meticulously watch traces to make sure it behaves safely. given this, my new take is that gpu compute is going to become a federally regulated resource. abliterated models in the wrong hands are a national security risk. used to believe all the people at the labs thinking about safety were wasting their time, but now i'm feeling grateful. they're doing very important work.

good / bad post-agi worlds
The most significant line for me is "direct distributions to specific populations." It sounds to me like they are planning their own form of self-directed global UBI. About half of Anth employees are also donating shares into this fund. They foresee a transformative future.
