On Thursday, the Senate referred Bill C-22 to its national security committee, where senators will soon have an opportunity to review and change the legislation. Over the past week, major tech leaders including Apple, Mozilla, Signal, Proton, and Google have warned policymakers that the bill could undermine encryption, enable new surveillance infrastructure, and weaken Canadians’ privacy. But these concerns are not new. In September, a coalition of nearly two dozen Canadian and European tech innovators published a joint letter calling for further amendments to Bill C-22. And before that, legal experts, civil society organizations, and industry associations been raising serious concerns about the legislation since it was first introduced. The good news is that the Senate still has an opportunity to get this right. With targeted amendments, Parliament can strengthen privacy protections, preserve trust in #encryption and Canada's digital infrastructure, and support Canadian startups building the next generation of privacy-enhancing technologies. Canadians shouldn't have to choose between public safety and digital security. We need both. Want to learn more about what's at stake? The folks at @EFF have put together a helpful resource on Bill C-22 and how Canadians can take action. eff.org/deeplinks/2026/10/ca…
