Josh has taught other pastors to listen to Robert Morris to learn how to preach this version of tithing. To be fair, I believe this older video was prior to Morris’s scandal. But it does show where Josh got these ideas.

I made a mistake. I cut the clip too short. Later in the video, Josh confirms that if you can’t redeem a resource by honoring God with it, God may be leading you to release it, by “giving those funds directly to His mission”. Which in this context, is writing that dollar amount in the Stored Resources section of the commitment card for the $225 million campaign.

Adding context: This clip comes from a longer video walking members through commitment cards for the $225 million Into the Breach campaign. Josh explains the “gifts from my stored resources” section, which includes savings, stocks, and property. Honoring God with our resources is noble. But the implication here is that God may be calling you to “release” those resources by giving them to the church. Why else include this category on the card? And why specifically mention a home unless selling it to give to the church is a possibility they want people to consider? Full video is here for context: intothebreach.lakepointe.chu…

I hope the folks at Lakepointe know they shouldn’t feel guilty for not wanting to sell their home or liquidate their savings, investments, or other valuable assets to fund Josh Howerton’s Into the Breach campaign. You shouldn’t have to justify keeping your home by turning it into a ministry opportunity. Making people feel guilty for not surrendering their personal assets is manipulation, not discipleship.

Transparency and accountability are vital for the modern church. They protect those who give, help leaders avoid pitfalls, and build trust. So grateful Nathan Apffel, host of the Religion Business, and @_jeremiahj had this conversation.

He’s fully supported his friend Josh McPherson’s endorsement of her.

100% agree. And yet Josh Howerton at Lakepointe incorrectly claims if we don’t give our first 10% to the local church we’re stealing from God and then God cannot bless us financially.

Doesn’t “endorse candidates”, but encourages “Live Free Nation” to “flip an election” in Texas. Make it make sense…

Contrast that to today, where Josh Howerton puts up the Kalshi betting odds for the Texas senate race (never thought I’d see a pastor do that), directs people to the church’s voting website, and encourages his followers (Live Free Nation) to “flip an election”.

Praying Lakepointe can return to the wisdom, humility, and steady love shown here. Miss this. Pastor Steve Stroope never prioritized politics or chased platforms. He just taught people how to walk with Jesus and lead well. Grateful for the example.

I don’t have any concerns about the ladders either. He used this same illustration in January 2024. Reusing it isn’t automatically wrong, but when whole sermons get recycled, I do question how much prep went into them.

1/3 If a pastor wants to share political opinions, he should be willing to speak truth even when it conflicts with the platform he’s building.

We received this invitation and thought it was a thank you lunch, but turns out it was a part of the initial rollout of this giving campaign. RSVP’ed yes, only to have the invitation rescinded by a campus pastor after they performed an audit, the day before.l

Just to clarify, each of the Synoptic Gospels records Simon as being from Cyrene. And while it may be plausible the Rufus in Romans is Simon’s son, I don’t believe that we can know that for certain as you state here.
