I never had a problem with the original mix, and I think it’s their best!
The Replacement's 'Tim' is as powerful an evocation of working class life as any by Springsteen or Pulp. Resentment and joy dwell in nearly every detail: bus route-courtships, scared-but-stalwart-single-mothers and the watering holes where every night dreams both blossom and die.

I literally listened to this every day that summer of 1980. Never had another tape in the car stereo. Why would I?
Happy 73rd birthday to Joe Strummer, the individual who perhaps more than any other inspired and clarified for me what it is I wanted to do with my life. Reposting an essay I wrote about the 40th anniversary of London Calling for The Ringer. Oh mi corazon. theringer.com/music/2019/12/…

I'm just an animal looking for a home
Subtly retreating from the avant-garde and upping the groove in the process, 'Speaking In Tongues' is the Talking Heads LP I treasure most. 'Girlfriend Is Better' is the Prince masterpiece he forgot to write. 'This Must Be The Place' is Steely Dan on an unsupervised tour of punk.

Springsteen’s ‘Born In The USA’ is his saddest LP: a devastating account of American cruelty ranging from the betrayed veteran of the title track to the factories-closing victim of “My Hometown”. The E Street pageantry and amped up production only makes it weirder. A masterpiece.

The called him "Easy Money". When I wrote a song about Alan Greenspan several years ago, I really thought he'd never die.
Alan Greenspan has passed away. Here’s the best song about him: piped.video/8Q_1G_-V100?si=J98F…. @paranoiacs

Seeing them next week!
Built To Spill's 'There's Nothing Wrong With Love' is the 90's dirtbag equivalent of 'Born To Run': a series of moving small town picaresques all about discovering the workable ratio of romance, drugs and dreams required to achieve escape velocity from a dead end life. A classic.

Ohio represent!
Thirty-nine minutes of institutionalized misogyny, death spiral capitalism and love songs as mesmerizing as any written in the 20th century, The Pretenders’ ‘Learning To Crawl’ is a miracle of perfect hooks, charged recollections and a mother's determined optimism. A masterpiece.

I love them both!
'69 Love Songs' is the Magnetic Fields' LP that is justifiably lionized as a big conceptual swing, but 1995's New Order-On-A-Fostex-4-Track 'Get Lost' is the great LP of theirs that I turn to most . A counter-factual history of indie-rock where Roxy Music replaces rock. A prayer.

Ha! I’m currently listening to this one. I haven’t read that article in years, but as I remember this one ranked near the top.
Happy 74th birthday to Richard Thompson, a dark eminence and songwriting hero whose mainline into the heights and depths of the human struggle has nourished us for five decades. Here's a career overview I wrote about him for Stereogum a few years back. stereogum.com/1826762/richar…

Congratulations from PJ and the rest of the gang!
"There's a case to be made for Elizabeth Nelson as the best rock lyricist of this moment. Nelson and the Paranoid Style are the most persuasive argument I know for the ongoing vitality of rock and roll." Rad review of 'Known Associates' on Fresh Air today! npr.org/2026/03/06/nx-s1-573…

So good 😍
Happy birthday to Roberta Flack, whose '69 masterpiece 'First Take' I was lucky enough to review for Pitchfork in 2020, and remains a North Star in all of my songwriting and work. Les Mcann, Leonard Cohen and Ewan McColl. The first time ever I saw my face. pitchfork.com/reviews/albums…

"At once rousing and mournful and positively buzzing with the erotic friction of sin and salvation." It was my distinct pleasure to write about Belle & Sebastian's 1996 masterpiece "If You're Feeling Sinister" for Pitchfork, an LP which lit a path for me. pitchfork.com/reviews/albums…

“In Boulder, it reportedly gets angry phone calls whenever it's played on the radio. What better recommendation could you ask?” R. Christgau. Funny, if actually true?
Neil Young’s ‘Tonight's The Night’ LP remains the single most sinister and insinuating chronicle of the hippie generation’s inexorable drift towards the various death cults of hard drugs, wall-to-wall consumerism and the politics of personal gratification. Let the bad times roll.

His last great album
Having gone through hell just to get to hell, Elvis Costello’s '86 ‘Blood And Chocolate’ LP is 48-minutes of shrill and thrilling score-settling leveled against past lovers, industry dweebs and primarily himself. A psychic demolition derby. Hope you're satisfied what you’ve done.

Happy birthday @RandyNewman
Five decades later, Randy Newman's "Louisiana 1927" remains a subtle miracle. Three minutes of wry alchemy which manages to recount a tragedy lost to history and a people forgotten by time, without resorting to cheap sentimentality or class condescension. A perfect American song.

Ronnie and Neil. Rock stars today ain’t half as real. Happy 80th Old Man
"After the circus of Watergate, the pointless slog of Vietnam, and the gradual debasement of counterculture ethos, his strange trip came into bold relief." Happy 80th birthday to Neil Young. Here's a piece I wrote about the 'On The Beach' for the Atlantic. theatlantic.com/culture/arch…

Happy birthday to Bruce Springsteen, who bridged the shadow world of tenement work with the still more corrupt onset of the new oligarchies. Here's a piece I wrote over at the Ringer about the airline strikes of 1981 and the 40th anniversary of 'Nebraska'. theringer.com/2022/12/14/mus…

It's deeply fitting and joyfully moving that Superchunk, of all bands, has become our best and most reliable political compass amongst American rock bands in the post-dissociative years of national life. Five straight reunion LPs of refusenik jams and wild-eyed seeking. Punk CCR.
