The Mamdani administration is renewing a contract with a controversial prison phone call provider that records detainees' calls and wants to use them to build AI surveillance systems.
It's the latest example example of Mamdani-era DOC behaving just like Adams-era DOC.
"...Brooklyn Defenders warned of 'a community surveillance apparatus that reaches far beyond jail walls, sweeping up the families, friends, and communities of incarcerated New Yorkers without their knowledge.'" @BklynDefender#Securus#Rikersthecity.nyc/2026/05/12/riker…

“The Center for Independence of the Disabled, New York (CIDNY) supports the right to humane treatment for people who are incarcerated in jails like Rikers Island. That is why we’re grateful to see the creation of this new online portal for incarcerated people and their loved ones to file grievances. People with disabilities are entitled to their disability-related rights even while housed in New York State jails and prisons. We encourage Governor Hochul to appoint reform-minded commissioners to the SCOC this spring who have experience with incarceration and disability.”

Today at 12 pm, we're joining @MaketheRoadNY, @JFREJNYC, @NYWFP, and others at City Hall in NYC to oppose the illegal and immoral moves by @NYCMayor to target New Yorkers. Instead of working to #ShutRikers, Adams is putting Rikers into service for Trump's authoritarian agenda.
RELEASE: Groups working to shut Rikers join with ICE Out of NYC Coalition to reject @NYCMayor's plans to bring ICE officers back to Rikers Island Jail Complex. This move by Adams is callous and dangerous. #ShutRikers

“Katal & our partners have been fighting for over two years to get the City Council to weigh in on federal receivership at Rikers. The Council’s letter to the court indicates that our sustained organizing has worked," said @yonahzeitz in @QueensEagle.
