KBS Long-Term Agroecosystem Research, part of the US LTAR Network working to develop strategies for the sustainable intensification of agriculture #kbsltar
When nothing is consistent about growing season weather these days, one thing that helps with consistency and stability is no-till. Over the 30 years of the @KBSLTER experiment, no-till has, on average, out-performed conventional tillage.

July 27th - Upcoming #fieldday for landowners & farmers in Delton, MI! Check out a working farm that has taken big steps to improve soil health. Fun for the whole family! Register here: events.anr.msu.edu/fordfarm2…
Please RT!
We had a great food-grade grains field day where participants the many opportunities and challenges going from Field to Mug, Spoon, and Jug. Check out the recap here: canr.msu.edu/news/key-takeaw… Thanks to our co-sponsers & organizers @MiAgAdvance@SOTWMilling@MSUEFieldCrops
ALT Food-grade grains featured during the field day (all growing @kbsltar!). Left to right: Canola (near harvest), Buckwheat (recently planted), rye, wheat, oats
This time of year we can see clear differences between the @kbsltar tilled plots and the regeneratively managed plots with year round living roots. The yellowish plots are winter canola at peak flower! Thanks Ruben Ulbrich @BassoLabMSU for the great picture.
We are hiring! Position open for a Senior Agroecologist, with opportunities to work closely with @KBSLTER, @kbsltar, and more!
Expertise: ecosystems ecology, biogeochemistry, global environmental change.
Applications due March 8th. Details here!

Opening! KBS Soil Health & Ecosystem Ecology Lab @Sprunger_PhD is hiring a Research Technician. Posting here - careers.msu.edu/en-us/job/51…
See lab website for add'l details: sprungerlab.com
This lab is invaluable to the @kbsltar, collecting all our #soilhealth samples!
@BrookKBSFarm & Christine Charles shared stories about our @kbsltar transition to a #regenerativeagriculture system. Success: noticeable resilience to drought in corn grown w/ more soil health practices! Challenge: slugs are a struggle for canola in a transitioning system.
Our friends and colleagues with @MiAgAdvance & @KBSLTER are hosting a great meeting for Michigan farmers to connect and share knowledge about new and innovative practices they’re trying! Save the date! We hope to be there too!
Mark your calendars, and don't miss early-bird registration for Underground Innovations, hosted by our partners, @MiAgAdvance! In this networking event we will hear from farmers how they've come to adopt new practices and what they have planned!

So proud of #ethan weinrich - Longterm experiments allow exploring soil-plant-VAM interactions for phosporus cycling through organic farming management and cover crop species- students taking it the farmer with practical soil health @kbsltar#savesoil#biodiversity
Great talk by @kbsltar and @KBSLTER scientist @Sprunger_PhD! Soil nematode communities respond rapidly to changes in land management and also correlate with other indicators of #soilhealth (POXC, soil protein). “How can we build a soil food web database across @USLTAR” #ACSmtg
@kbsltar and @kbslter PhD student Grant Falvo presents @GLBioenergy data about long-term greenhouse gas emissions from variable land use types. Results suggest that replacing annual row crops with perennials has positive impacts on carbon sequestration. #ACSmtg
Kicking off the @USLTAR sessions @ACSmtg! @kbsltar Dr. Mir Zaman analyzed 12 yrs of soil water data @KBSLTER and found that perennial and annual crops use similar amounts of water. An important consideration if we foresee more of landscape having perennials!
