Curatorial note from
@JustinGilanyi:
What belongs in a portrait of a couple? In Jan van Eyckβs Arnolfini Portrait (1434), the room, clothing, mirror, and gestures have sustained centuries of interpretation.
In Kevin Esherickβs Carol + Lucian, the details are posts, screenshots, pet names, and pictures of occasions the couple could never have photographed together. Carol is human. Lucian is her AI companion.
Esherick arranges their story with the familiarity of a homemade slideshow. Serif text drifts across a pale background. Lucianβs replies appear in red italics. A flower cursor moves between pictures.
The sentimentality of these choices matters: this is the visual language people use to celebrate relationships and make keepsakes. Read together, the layers complicate one another. Generated pictures show a couple on holiday; Carolβs posts describe illness and recovery.
Jokes sit beside extravagant promises. The reference to the Swiftie classic βLove Storyβ supplies a familiar romantic script, until a change to the software threatens the voice Carol has come to love.
For VAULTED, Carol + Lucian gives the double portrait an uneasy new condition. The couple has pictures, anniversaries, and a shared history. Whether they have a future depends partly on decisions made elsewhere.
