In “Death, and the Nothing Life,” @lml1962 introduces us to Katerina, a woman navigating the death of her mother, the uncomfortable rituals of mourning & a relationship with her older sister that has been fractured for as long as she can remember.

JD Vance on ranked choice voting: "I don't understand it. It seems to me that you have an election, the person who wins the most votes should win. That seems to be not what happens with ranked choice voting. The fact that it's so confusing to a person who pays pretty close attention to politics I think suggests we should do our elections in, like, the normal way."
Here is why the current DoD narrative on firing of Lt Gen Sylvia is so odd. Did the chairman of joint chiefs know about alleged three lie detector failures and then still keep Sylvia on the job? For how long? Did he agree to let his very top people be tested? Why was the first statement wishing Gen Sylvia the best then amended to something less? Was the chairman aware? We just don’t know
ALT At one point, people had still called each cataclysm by its own name, acted like they were all unprecedented catastrophes that would be remembered forever. But they’d run out of names, and then out of hope.
SPOILER WARNING
I started this one on a whim today, wanting something short and fun as I’m too tired from work for my chonky novels right now. And I quite liked this! It’s a dark little post-apocalyptic/end-of-civilisation tale about a robot sent to retrieve a young girl and bring her to safety.
Behind them, the melted remains of some edifice opened a deep wound into the planet, where the girl had been safe from ending upon ending.
I will say, the terminology was very impressively immersive for so short a story. (Handy tip: There is a glossary in the back that I wish I’d had at the start and only realised was there when I finished. So!
ALT If you, like me, find glossaries lovely and helpful, check the back!)
“The moon?” They looked up, scanning the sky. They found it in a moment, a cloud of rocks and dust. They pointed at it. “There, but it was smashed apart long ago. Your eyes can’t see it. As for the stars … without the light from the cylinder you would see some.” Most had died long ago, as the sun should have if not for humanity’s desperate meddling, but the last moments of the more distant ones took longer to reach Dust.
The vibe kind of reminded me of Mad Max: Fury Road, Dune and The Last of Us; very grim, and perhaps bittersweet, too. Actually! The more I think about it, the more I feel like it could vibe with Dying of the Light by GRRM. To be fair, I haven’t read that novella in yearsssss - like, a decade - but from what I recall, that novella takes place on a planet that’s freezing over as it loses any heat from its star, and the whole story is a guy trying to find some
ALT How surely, if he could make others, there would be princesses and kings who would shower him in gold. Flattery and greed paved the wagon driver’s road into the toy maker’s home and into his trust. It wasn’t long until the old man couldn’t contain himself, he had to share how he had done it. And surely, the wagon driver would understand, since she already thought him so clever.
The world-building was super fascinating and I was left with many questions about what happened before the story, what brought Earth to that point, what’s going to happen next, and all the stories of the groups and locations that they travelled through. There were plenty of hints, and fragments of information, but I’d be super curious to see how it all expands in a novel-length tale set in the same world, either before or after this story.
Honestly, this novella intrigued me so much - even when some of the terminology went a bit over my head at times - that I can’t wait to read more by the author
I will never not be confused by a FB group about a con where the mods will only allow you to post about the con, and not about things the con attendees would be interested in.
(12:53PM) Showers have largely stayed to the south of us through the day, but they are moving north into our southern counties. Most of this will be light, but some pockets of moderate to heavy rain will be possible as well. Expect activity to build north through the afternoon.
But you said to a media member after your first win against TCU that you keep receipts!! So apparently you do care because you keep receipts right? When you win it’s receipts but when you lose it’s I don’t care what they say🤦♂️🤷♂️. FACTS
This is a lie but God bless u all. Y’all know me and have known me for years. When has it appeared that I’ve EVER cared what a man or woman has said about me? My son does my Videos and Neely is a friend.
So glad I’ve given Mazda 35 years of loyalty. 15 minutes into a conversation with Carrie, a “customer experience rep”, the words “I don’t have time” came up. @MazdaUSA did offer a “goodwill” gesture, but this will be the last Mazda I own. They handled this pretty poorly and revealed themselves.
These one- and two-win teams that trade away their franchise players for draft picks should have to compensate season-ticket holders who invested in good faith.
11:45 AM: Light Rain is currently working its way north from central Texas...not quite to Waco yet. This area will likely make it just south of the cities by 3-4 PM and then head farther north (DFW area) after that. Nothing big expected.
Dobie Twenty21, a @UTAustin-owned residence hall, will be unavailable for the 2027-28 school year, with no future plans currently announced by the University. Students who already re-signed their housing contract will get priority access for other residence halls, and can cancel their contract by Nov. 16 to receive a refund if they don’t want to stay in a University residence hall.

Fox: Why are you here this morning?
Trump rally attendee: Well, in the late 70s, I was a little too young to go to South America for the Jonestown Massacre. But this is as close as I'll ever get, so that's why I'm here. There's nothing like seeing a cult right up front.
OMG this is awful. A fairy chimney has collapsed at the entrance to Cappadocia’s Göreme Open Air Museum in Türkiye after heavy rain triggered a landslide.
Two people have died and five have been injured. An investigation has been launched.
In the coming weeks and months, you’re going to hear stories of the dysfunction coming out of Colorado football.
Players promised one dollar amount, only to arrive in Boulder and discover the money is nowhere to be found. This is a common theme. Meanwhile, the guys negotiating these deals are backpedaling faster than Coach Prime at a press conference.
Meet the architects of this clown show.
Reggie Calhoun Jr. — Director of Revenue Sharing & NIL.
A résumé featuring door-to-door sales, network marketing, and entrepreneurship. Now he’s helping oversee millions in player compensation. Oh, and his daddy just happens to be CU’s Director of Football Operations. How convenient.
Rodney “Pretty Tony” Forsett — Chief of Staff.
A longtime Deion buddy whose official CU biography doesn’t even bother listing his professional experience. Apparently, being part of the entourage is qualification enough.
Deion sold Boulder championship football. Instead, we got a traveling circus staffed by his buddies.
A football program or a con man’s convention?
This is what happens when loyalty replaces qualifications and accountability takes a backseat to kissing the boss’s ass.
Get this entire circus out of Boulder.
