Same model price + half the budget → roughly half the usage, given comparable tasks and settings. So: $200 plan is now $100 plan, $20 is now $10. What the frick. Announcing this cut right before DevDay is the most absurd timing imaginable. It will cast a negative shadow over DevDay and reflect poorly on the event. I understand that OpenAI is facing compute issues - to the point where they even had to pause new subscriptions - but this cut is going to backfire.
Hold on. I misread that. They halved my $200 sub plan? But framed it as more efficient in the long run? Wtf?

Yeah, OpenAI Fable'ed themselves. First Anthropic released Fable in June and had the weird usage issue, and now OpenAI is going through the same problem, although I guess they are more open about it. They better keep the big internal models inside and just release distilled versions to the public. Feels like the current compute crunch is so severe for them, it actually negatively affects their research progress. Might also account for why the major labs were looking to decel a couple of weeks ago. In the race to AGI, compute is currency.

for coding agents, repeated context means half the budget can yield less than half the work

technically they will drop a cut in prices for models or new cheaper models to compete with opus and sonnet

From the cancellations, they're going to revert course. Unless their free stuff at DevDay really hits hard.

I don’t think $100 and $20 are changing, $200 was double the usage per dollar before, now it’s the same as buying two separate $100 plans.

What a disgrace Anthropic has been dominating the space with good models and usage but OpenAi's answer to that is to piss off customers lol .

From what I understood the 200$ plan is now basically a 10x plan (which is the same as Anthropics 200$). However this usage cut seems to only apply to the 200$ plan, not the 100$ or 20$ plan. I might be wrong tho

Gg. Now 20x is a 10x. And in the posthe said in the future the plan would be the same as paying for api use.. lol...

$20 and $100 plans are the same. They change the $200 plan to get the same amount of usage instead of double. Previously the $200 plan got quadruple usage of the $100 plan at only double the price. Essentially it's just having 10 $20 plans... Always confused me why it was 20x but that had to end eventually.

It is actually pretty reasonable. The heaven we were having with claude code and codex was and is an illusion. While they keep you on their ecosystem they are actually burning money so they will need to figure out a way to profitability. That is why sol focused on the pricing. I think 5.6 was decent and 6 sol is also decent with half the price. Now that the prices of the models going down, they can take down the isage proportionally and it would feel the same to the user without it costing as much to openai. This is inevitable, with Anthropic it is also inevitable. The problem is not the sol usage but the astra usage, we should have a as good model as astra with half the price so that openai would burn less money while it would be same for the user. Again, I think this is good and not bad because this is inevitable and now we can clearly see how openai is trying to play this game and I think it is a nice play. It is a play where people can still do very meaningful jobs with 100$ or 200$ subscriptions if they are burning it randomly. We also need to use the tokens correctly and efficiently. This will be the skill to sell on the coming years I believe with the ability to learn and critical thinking. Again this was inevitable and I believe openai is playing this correctly, preparing well and doing the announcement actually on the right time if they have something good tomorrow. So that people would talk about this for a day and not weeks if they can override the narrative tomorrow on devday.

Kimmo, Not defending this but you left out the piece where they also halved API prices. So yes pro usage is cut in half but API is cut in half as well, so functionally, if we were not told about this, we wouldn't/shouldn't have known there was a change

"$20 is now $10" ? didn't he say it applied only to the Pro $200 plan? "we are re-opening the Pro $200 subscriptions, but together with it we are also changing how we calculate the usage for it. "

They will probably say that all prices will be cut in half on DevDay, and it would be the same usage...
