Imagine the arrogance of a Westerner copy-pasting some Wikipedia miscellanea and posting a comment about Song Qingling (Sun Yat-sen's wife) who "never mastered Mandarin", only because she spoke with a Shanghainese accent.
Here is a speech she gave in Mandarin in 1952 at the Peace Conference of the Asian and Pacific Regions.
What about Mao and Deng, and just about every top-ranking leader of that period of history, who also spoke in their strong regional accents ? Did they, too, never mastered Mandarin ?!
