This is heartbreaking but sadly not surprising. @gtownprimary headteacher “Children can’t learn if they’re hungry”. We’re fortunate to have so many amazing schools & teachers but politics needs to do much better. What potential are we diminishing by keeping people poor?
"These children & families are not just numbers on a page, these are real people...and it's real lives"
What a powerful, powerful @BBCRadio4 piece from Redcar (21:30 in) on the daily, devastating impact of poverty on local families & schools ⤵️

Quick thread on the Astra Zeneca (AZ) covid vaccine since it's been in the news today.
TLDR there isn't a new "smoking gun", the AZ vax was one of first and cheapest, it saved millions of lives globally, there are better vax out there now, adapted to new variants 1/9

All living UK Chief Medical Officers support the Tobacco and Vapes Bill.
Smoking kills and harms very large numbers. Most smokers wish they had never started but are trapped by addiction.
A smoke-free generation would be a major health advance.

This lack of diversity in terms of privilege and wealth is important not only in terms of understanding how policy often makes inequality worse but also creates a lack of empathy for those experiencing different circumstances as highlighted in the covid enquiry
🚨 PRIVATE EDUCATION IN THE CABINET 🚨
Following yesterday's reshuffle -
🔵 63% of the new cabinet attended a private school (vs ~7% of the UK population)
🔵 41% went through a pipeline from private school to Oxford or Cambridge University

If what you her from McNamara made you feel angry, I’m not surprised, I do too
One lesson we must surely take from this is that an old boy’s club is the worst way to run a country. Good govt doesn’t just need competence, it needs female & diverse perspectives at very top too
'Former deputy cabinet secretary Helen MacNamara told the inquiry about the macho culture contaminated by ego and that women who worked in government felt invisible.'
@BethRigby reflects on today's evidence to the COVID inquiry

This is a really interesting in-depth analysis of the political & economic direction in the States
From @RanaForoohar: President Biden is shaping the beginning of a sea change in America’s political economy from trickle down to bottom up...to a core emphasis on “work, not wealth.” The record on that score is unequivocal. washingtonmonthly.com/2023/1…

Oh, and a bonus chart that I think will fry a lot of people’s brains and break a lot of narratives:
For all the talk of six figure costs of college in the States, here’s how much debt graduates leave university with in the UK and US vs other countries

It gets worse.
US cities are poorly served by public transit, too car centric, but at least you CAN drive to/around them.
Euro cities (+ London) are the inverse: a pain to drive in, but great public transport.
Other UK cities are screwed: 💩 public transport AND bad road infra
