On January 13, 1972, David Bowie went out to Heddon Street in London for a photo shoot that would result in one of the most famous album covers in Rock History.
Brian Ward photographed him in front of number 23, beneath the K. West sign, while the rainy night transformed the street into an almost cinematic setting.
Bowie was portraying Ziggy Stardust, the alien who had just become the centerpiece of his new artistic identity. The original photograph was taken in black and white and later hand-colored by Terry Pastor. The suit that appears blue on the cover was originally green, and the guitar he is holding was a Gibson Les Paul belonging to guitarist Mark Pritchett.
The image became the cover of "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars," released on June 16, 1972. Heddon Street would later become a place of pilgrimage for his fans.
