Entire jobs and careers are being wiped out.
An entire generation spent 5–10 years studying at some of the best universities in the world, only to watch gpt become more useful than them at the very things they spent years preparing for.
We all know that transitional periods are often among the most violent moments in history, and we are probably living through one of the biggest transitions humanity has ever experienced.
Not necessarily because of its intensity, but because of the speed at which it's happening:
> in the 90s the internet era begins
> just 30 years later we depend on electronic devices to work and socially exist
> AI arrives and takes the normies' world by storm
> the biggest fears is not "will AI kill us" but social employement and generations spending their lives to get ready for a job that AI can do better with no years of preparation
> fear turns into anger, mixed with heavy nationalism already in the room, everyone needing someone to blame, people become increasingly unable to see beyond their noses, division becomes real, war.
> add to that educational systems that are at least two decades behind, incapable of teaching people how to research, think critically, use these new tools, filter information, or even recognize geographically targeted socials manipulation.
It's a whole mess out there.
And as much as I want to stay positive, many of the signs point toward a difficult road ahead. The beautiful thing about humanity, though, is that we tend to change when we reach a tipping point.
That's why I still believe that doing our part, refusing to give in to the chaos, and setting an example can help mitigate the shitty cascade effect we are witnessing.
We will see, humans will make it one way or the other, but our generation is suffering and will suffer even more.
I genuinely believe we may be entering one of the most uncertain era in human history.
Entire skill and knowledge based careers are getting wiped out, and it's only accelerating.
From designers, editors, engineers, architects, data analysts... what previously needed a team of 10, now you only needs 2 people.
I genuinely believe there will soon be more humans than tasks that need humans to accomplish.
If or when this happens, what happens to society as a whole?
Does the human specie realign its purpose towards more creative outings, like making art, socializing, humour, and being.. humans?
Or, once our sense of purpose, which is derived from our need to survive, vanishes, will humans fall into an era of darkness?
Only time will tell. On the long tail, I am optimistic. Humans are ingenious and capable, and eventually, society will re-organize itself.
What worries me though is what happens during this transition period.
