Automated optogenetic control of hundreds of cells in parallel. Each cell is individually steered, collectively acting as a "tissue printer". Preprint & code out!
300,000-500,000 USD vs 3,000-4,000 USD. A high-end AFM next to a DIY one built on a DVD pickup. Not a replacement, but nanoscale imaging for classrooms and small labs. Open access review in JJAP:

📣 new preprint multimodal atlas. Imaging + scRNA, 57M cells. 🧬🔬
Cells are complex dynamical systems — but most ways we measure them destroy them. We asked: how does live imaging compare to scRNA-seq, the field’s gold std?
The answer surprised us 🧵

🔬The authors of this new paper demonstrate multimodal imaging of live cell co-cultures, including quantitative phase imaging (QPI) through differential phase contrast (DPC) imaging.

Releasing the model weights and technical report of Kimi K3.
Kimi K3 is our most capable model: a 2.8T MoE model with native visual understanding and a 1M-token context window.
New model architecture: 2.5x the intelligence per unit of compute, not just more params.
Alongside Kimi K3, we're opening up more of the stack behind it — high-performance attention kernels, MoE communication library, and infrastructure for running agent environments at scale.

I should also point out that there are other *excellent* steps in the "smart microscopy" + optogenetics direction, including recent efforts by the Pertz and Kapitein labs, that are reviewed here. Take a look!

New Toettchlab paper alert! Harrison Oatman just published his beautiful work combining software design for "smart" microscopy+optogenetics and some really beautiful work understanding EGFR-driven collective cell migration.

🥳🍾 Super excited to share one of the last papers from my PhD, out today in @Matter_CP. In this work, we introduce a very fast-relaxing (half time of ~seconds) *and* photopolymerizable hydrogel that allows for projection-based cell encapsulation in dynamic matrices. Link below!
Last-minute advert for the Convpaint workshop at I2K by Roman Schwob! Interactive segmentation in @napari_imaging . Today 2:00 PM CET. Free registration:

Fantastic paper by @JamesBeanBio on phage Bas63 - this has been one of the first phages I ever isolated just for fun as a PhD student (in 2012!). It's #2 on this plate of Rhine river water on an E.coli K-12 lawn....
How it started /// How it's going
Most recent paper out now at science advances. We investigated a BASEL phage belonging to the felixounavirus genus and discovered evolutionary relationships with distantly related phages. Collaborative work between @HiCryoEM and @mihnea_bostinascience.org/doi/10.1126/scia…
PAPER OUT ✨ "hack" your microscope to work as a 3D printer! micrometer sized features at cm scale. <5$ in material costs per chip. from idea to experiment within a day. first paper of my phd in PertzLab @PertzL to make it through peer review! doi.org/10.1039/D5LC00181A
A real-time all-optical interface for dynamic perturbation of neural activity during behavior: sciencedirect.com/science/ar…
Real-time interface that integrates CaImAn for online calcium imaging analysis, and a custom hologram program for two-photon optogenetic stimulation.
🚀 Excited to share scPortrait! Led by Sophia Mädler & Niklas Schmacke w/ the Mann lab — a new @scverse tool for standardized single-cell image data. Enables ML-ready extraction, >1B cell processing, cross-omics, & cancer macrophage insights.

In 2005, over 20 years ago I built an OPA and doubled it to play with all UV CARS, 20 years later, using left over parts and a laser I built a simple UV spectroscopy apparatus, if funding returns then I hope to return to deep UV and CARS... someday
