The July 28 MCP update is a breaking change for every MCP client and server. The move to stateless communication is the right architectural direction, but "upgrade everything at once" is not a realistic production strategy for most teams.
@linsun_unc wrote a practical guide to doing this safely using
@agentgateway: dark launch the upgraded server with zero production traffic, validate that it handles both legacy and modern clients, canary traffic up gradually, and roll back instantly if anything goes wrong. The client endpoint never changes throughout.
The core insight is that protocol upgrades and traffic migrations are separate problems. Modern MCP SDKs already handle both protocol versions. The harder part is controlling when production traffic actually moves, and that is a routing problem, not an application problem. agentgateway turns every rollout decision into a configuration change rather than a redeployment.
If you are running MCP servers in production and need a concrete playbook for the July 28 migration, this is a good one to follow.
