With the announcement of 5-8 Mexican Grey Wolves coming in January, here’s some interesting facts:
• The Mexican Grey Wolf’s official scientific name is Canis lupus baileyi, also known as the Lobo.
• Mexican Grey Wolves once ranged from central Mexico throughout the southwestern U.S. Today, they can only be found in southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico.
• Right now, there are fewer than 230 Mexican Grey Wolves in the wild and about 300 in captivity.
• Although their numbers have grown slowly, they remain one of the most endangered subspecies of wolf in the world because of compromised genetics, human intolerance and reluctance to release more individuals and bonded pairs to the wild.
