This 👇 plus the reality that no one actually wants custom everything. We tell ourselves this lie every few years (eg the Internet was supposed to create markets-of-one for music, literature, etc.). But the reality is we're social beings.
Why would anyone spend money buying apps when they could spend 10x that amount buying tokens and wasting their weekends building everything from scratch?

Happy first day of the ski season for all who celebrate.
While there's a foot or so on the snow stake right now, I think we have actually seen quite a bit more. Especially early in the storm, we had several periods where it snowed an inch or two before melting off. Then, we've seen quite a bit of additional melt-off/compaction since. Hidden Peak, which is >1,500ft higher than this snow stake probably has seen 2+ feet of snow. The snow stake at this elevation is probably around 18 inches when you include the snow that had melted off during the first half of the storm.

Anthropic at @aiDotEngineer NYC: the length of tasks AI can complete doubles every 4 months, yet 74% of AI’s economic gains go to just 20% of companies. Similar to what I heard at lunch yesterday (with Arsenal fans who run innovation at a large hedge fund): they're waaaayyyy ahead of the industry in terms of leveraging AI, and it's turning into $$ for them. Key is figuring out how to be part of that 20%.

I'm not a Musk fan but I'm a huge fan of his Tesla supercharger network. I held off on getting an electric car for years because I didn't want family trips slowed to power up. But last week I drove our R2 to the best Boulder (Utah) and our usual stop for gas/snacks was just as fast, thanks to a bevy of supercharger stations.

my truthful answer is that i would never presume what the problems are. i have not seen the inside of github's architecture since 2019. i know they have good folks working there. i know that type of scale coming so quickly is very hard to react to when you run at the scale GiHub runs at. nothing is really that elastic, and orders of magnitudes more traffic showing up very quickly is hard to get in front of. I've worked at extreme scale before and seen companies spend three months just preparing for events that will increase their traffic by 10% or 20% percent, which is nothing compared to what GitHub's facing now.

No idea who's right in this he said he said, but it does seem the sheer volume of money in AI is causing people to do all sorts of questionable things. From Google's "acquihiring" of Windsurf's senior staff (stranding ~200 other employees who, fortunately, landed well thanks to Cognition), CJ skipping out on his CEO obligations to MongoDB, etc., AI money may be leaving Silicon Valley looking morally bankrupt

We can do amazing things with them, but unlocking their full potential requires extraordinary discipline and knowledge
Bury your head in the ground at your own risk. I aim to not jump on any hype trains, but since Opus 4.6 and GPT-5.2 + the harnesses it was clear that these things can write code nearly as good as I can in my best language; better in other languages.
But we won't see non-devs push production code for a long time; possibly forever, if you ask me. Software still needs to be built in robust ways, and it's our profession to do this well, and use the new tools we have, which create new and interesting (+tough!) challenges
