If you thought my last post didn't have enough birds, or enough math, or enough math about birds, I have the post for you. moultano.wordpress.com/2026/…
I spent the last month obsessed with finding colors that can't be displayed on a conventional screen. This is what I found. moultano.wordpress.com/2026/…

The dream of the early internet was that everyone would run public facing software, and sorry but software just isn't good enough for that.

Another way that Americans don't know how good they have it, the prevalence of good and cheap Mexican food.
Every time I come to the US and have Mexican food I wonder why anyone bothers eating anything else Food is a solved problem and it was solved in Mexico City

The current CVE approach is like a 17-year cicada emergence. If you release all the bugs at the same time, the predators can't eat them all at once.

The security apocalypse feels like it's ultimately a test of whether people are morally good. If they aren't, everything gets owned.

Over the past two months, we have been leading a coalition to mitigate one of the most severe bugs in open source software found in recent memory, php2shell, found as part of our Patch the Planet initiative.

Towards securing the internet

My first programming language was PHP. I remember discovering the joy of creating software while learning to build in such a beginner-friendly and accessible language. That's one reason I've felt a

Can all cyber attackers just not attack for a year or so, just as a sort of gentleman's agreement. It's not sporting, given the circumstances.

Hey you criticize but if they had excluded numbers less than 10 the key would have less entropy and be more vulnerable to attack. How were they supposed to know people would guess those first.

The lesser known cousin of the wrench attack, "Your fully trusted authority is seemingly part of an uncontacted Amazonian tribe which lacks a word for numbers beyond those you can count on your fingers."
its obviously not *good* but admittedly having a private key of *4* as a globally trusted cert authority is one of the funniest bits of all time

This is an issue for parental controls too. Companies think that what parents want is a "no sex and violence" filter, and some do, but a lot of us instead want "this video isn't a waste of my kids' lives."
This is an incredible project: NBC News asked parents to check their kids' YouTube history during school hours — and the results show kids are spending huge chunks of the day watching videos that have nothing to do with learning nbcnews.com/specials/hooked-…

Man it is going to suck when the last wilderness gets coverage.
Unfortunately there is 5G in an increasing amount of the forest. As a struggling tech addict, I like when "no service" forces my behavior.

Same is true of animal names! woodchuck, chickadee, tanager, chipmunk, opossum, condor, coyote, jaguar. They're the best names we've got.
Anglicized Native American names are by far the best place names in the US. If we're going to go around randomly renaming things we should be switching to those. Consider how much better Manhattan is as a name than New York, or how much better Kentucky is than West Virginia.

If we're going to do land acknowledgements, this is how I want to do it. The people who lived here for 16 thousand years had time to come up with better names.

And if we renamed West Virginia we could retroactively make the lyrics of "Take me Home, Country Roads" correct, since all of the natural features it mentions are in the western part of Virginia.
