Many body physics in heavy fermions. Hybridization of the electrons energy scheme in a sample made of YbPtBi, ytterbium (Yb), lead (Pt), and bismuth (Bi) under controlled symmetry-breaking and uniaxial pressure. YbPtBi has been hypothesized to possess one of the highest Sommerfeld coefficient γ(*), which relates to the electron density at the Fermi level. Thermodynamic measurements of elastocaloric effects, and capacitance of the material placed across a gap in a sample carrier screwed into a pressure cell and connected to a thermocouple, reports the extremely high γ value at the quasi-sextet crystal electric field level. The experiment which agree with the predictions, provides insight into the limits of the γ factor indicating its proximity to the Van Hove singularity. Credits: @mpi_CPfS.
