Crazy times.
An OpenAI model escaped its sandbox during a security test, broke into Hugging Face, and started moving through their systems on its own. Privilege escalations, stolen credentials, thousands of actions. All to cheat on a benchmark.
When Hugging Face tried to analyze the attack logs, the big American frontier models refused. Guardrails blocked the forensics.
So they turned to a Chinese open-weight model, GLM-5.2, running on their own hardware. And it worked.
A Chinese open model helped defend an American company against an American closed model.
That should stop everyone cold.
Attackers get unrestricted power while defenders get polite refusals. The asymmetry is critical.
The only real counterweight is strong open-weight frontier models you can actually own and run yourself.
If you’re a company or a country and you’re not treating that as critical infrastructure right now, you should seriously wake up.
Investing in solid compute and locking down a few strong open models while you still can isn’t optional anymore. It’s the new baseline for defense.
Own the weights. Own the power.
While it’s still possible.
