VP @databricks, Founder @neondatabase. Building Lakebase Postgres for AI-native world

San Francisco, CA
Database architecture thread. Technical. There has been several startups building an operational relational databases focused on OLTP with a shared nothing architecture. @neondatabase is using a different approach - shared storage. What's the difference?

Can a single database architecture satisfy both vibe-coded and large scale enterprise apps? The same approach makes small database ultra cheap to run and branch can also make a large one faster and easier to operate. We call this architecture Lakebase.

The opportunity goes beyond an analytics endpoint. Shared storage also opens a path to offloading index builds, VACUUM and other long-running operations. Preserving MVCC and coordinating concurrent writes and catalog changes is where much of the work remains.

Lakebase is becoming a standard in modern OLTP design, but we're still early in getting all its benefits. You shouldn't need a different database architecture because your app took off. The same system that made it cheap to try an idea should let you build a large business on it.

Just write to Postgres and get realtime apps with Neon Realtime.

Neon realtime engine runs in a shallow read replica. Only lakebase architecture has severless read replicas that can run such an engine
Neon now has realtime, built by the team behind Electric. Turn any SQL query into a live query, joins and aggregates included. All inside Postgres, and ready for agents. It’s in public beta and available in all Neon plans. Give it a try and tell us what you think!

Lakebase architecture has many benefits. One of which is making every dba operation instant. This shift such operations left from dba to a developer and all the way to an agent.
Restoring a 100 TB database with Lakebase Postgres takes seconds. How? A branch-based restore is a metadata operation. It creates a branch at a point in time, referencing immutable history that already lives in decoupled storage. No copying data, no replaying WAL. Recovery is near-instant regardless of database size, and simple enough for agents to use in branching and undo workflows. databricks.com/blog/lakebase…

Neon realtime is so on brand with everything we do. Hardcore database engineering from first principles and an elegant developer interface. We will be blogging more about all the query processing approach we took here. @ElectricSQL team cooked!

Scalability, reliability, performance. This is an incredible team to increase investments into @neondatabase fundamentals
I’m excited to announce that Responsive has been acquired by Databricks to accelerate the development of Lakebase and Neon! We couldn't be more excited to join the Lakebase team. We've long admired their technical vision, and the more we got to know them, the more impressed we became by their ambition, execution, and momentum. It feels like a natural home for us. I want to thank Responsive’s customers, investors, and especially the team. More than anything, I’m grateful for the trust you’ve placed in us through the good times and the tough times. Onward and upward!

Today, we're launching the ability to say yes to Muse at work. People are giving Muse access to their company's most sensitive data & systems. Yet companies have no way to control this access. Many are blocking it. Others have had Muse go rogue, leaking company data, sending unauthorized emails, and more. Runlayer provides hundreds of secured connectors for Muse, governed by deterministic policies & runtime security models that you can control. Runlayer also detects when Muse is being used within company systems without governance, and alerts you. Teams get access to the most powerful personal agent. Companies maintain security and control. Win win.
