Mamdani appears to be wearing a jacket made from chindi, which is an Indian technique for upcycling fabric. Small remnants from previous projects are sewn onto each other using a continuous embroidery stitch, which creates in a boucle-like texture. This allows for less waste.

In 1972, a group of Harlem Renaissance cultural icons gathered at Duke Ellington's house.
The afternoon was captured on 16mm film by William Greaves, but the footage remained unedited in a vault for 50 years until David Greaves restored and completed his father's project, releasing the documentary in 2026.
Once Upon a Time in Harlem is a film that every New Yorker should see — and this weekend you can, at no cost.
