while working on agentick (to be presented at NeurIPS'26), @creus_roger found that ASCII inputs seemed to really help LLMs during his internship at @VmaxAI he pushed on this idea and came up with GlyphBench, which serves as a benchmark, a research tool, & post-training suite!

Congrats @natolambert ! I agree the community needs this type of work and investment, and you're one of the best people I can think of to lead it. Love the name and its explanation as well!
Today we're unveiling Trillium Labs @trillium_labs, a new non-profit to foster the open science of frontier AI. We're building open post-training recipes and will expand into open infra to study RSI, reward-hacking, multi-agent systems, and whatever comes next. We're built around the theory of change that you need more eyes to solve hard technical problems. We have faith in the scientific methods and communities that humanity has built, and worry that AI is becoming too closed to utilize them. Trilliums are wildflowers that bloom briefly in the spring, before the forest canopies fill out. Though they are small, they lay the foundation for the cycles of growth and nourishment through the rest of the year. At Trillium Labs, the recipes will be the slow nutrients for the seasons and the model releases will be the blooms. Building an institution dedicated to this is needed because, much as nature’s trilliums are slow to expand and grow, the open-ecosystem needs time and dedicated resources to catch up. I co-founded with with a long-time friend and collaborator Tom Zick (@thesezickbeats). We're hiring (full time + student collabs/interns), we're fundraising, and we're looking for compute. Please get in touch if you're interested in helping out. Offices based in the Bay Area and Cambridge MA, remote okay. I’m in the Bay Area until for The Curve and COLM to connect with people who are interested. We’re thankful to have initial support from Halcyon Futures and Schmidt Sciences with more funding en route to enable our ambitions of scaling. Our advisors @Thom_Wolf, @HannaHajishirzi, @gneubig and @ctnzr have been instrumental to building the ecosystem that exists today, and I’m stoked to get to keep working with them.

Agentick is accepted to NeurIPS E&D!! 🎉 How do zero-shot LLM agents compare with neural nets trained from scratch with RL? We put them on common ground to study their strengths and limitations in sequential decision-making. Paper, code & blog below! ⤵️
Launching Agentick 🤖🧠 A unified benchmark for training and evaluating general sequential decision-making agents. RL agents, LLMs, VLMs, hybrids, bots, and humans can all be evaluated on: same tasks. same seeds. same score. First result: no single agent dominates. 🧵

In 2012 I thought I had left ML research forever, until @hugo_larochelle brought me into Google brain in Montreal. I remain forever grateful for him believing in me and for guiding me during his time at Google. I feel honoured to call him a friend and colleague!
Very happy to see this profile of @hugo_larochelle Before I join Google Brain, I watched all his lectures from Sheffield. You have to remember at the time, all of the knowledge for deep learning belong to less then 100 people. He made it available to many more. He became my PhD advisor many years later. Hugo is an exceptional researcher, has shaped so much of our ecosystem.

Congratulations to Julian and @johanobandoc for organizing an excellent @AutoRL_Workshop at #RLC2026 !
Thanks to everyone who joined @AutoRL_Workshop, it was really great to see the room full and everyone actively participating. Until the next one! Really enjoyed working with Julian on the workshop, and I’m looking forward to the next chapters ahead 🥳 Excited for Day 2 of #RLC! 🚀

Come by, starting in 20ish minutes! I'm currently making my way from the airport but should arrive just in the nick of time 😅 Looking forward to moderating this debate!
🔥 AutoRL Debate, not your usual panel! We’re switching things up this afternoon. Instead of a traditional panel, our six participants will debate three controversial positions in AutoRL, with a twist: they’ll be randomly assigned to argue for or against each one, regardless of their own views. 👀 Expect opposing arguments, lively discussion, and hopefully a few surprising insights along the way. Come join us!! It is happening at 2:00 PM (Montreal time). Led by our amazing @pcastr! 🔥

I'll be moderating this debate at #RLC2026 tomorrow with these wonderful researchers, can't wait! I've been on holiday for the last three weeks, and will be coming straight from the airplane just in time for this debate... I hope I can keep up!

Sad news to read while on vacation! Like so many others, I've always liked up to and admired Jeff for his technical excellence, his kindness, his humbleness, his support @la_sala_ai & @Khipu_AI , & regularly showing up for #runconference . Google won't be the same without him 😥
Tomorrow will be my last day at Google after 27 years, and watching it grow from 25 people to 190,000+ has been an amazing journey. Below is a note I shared with many people internally at Google today. An excerpt is: It has been an absolute pleasure to work with you and to help build some of the most widely used and impactful products of all time. As a kid, I dreamed of helping build software that would be used by many people, and Google now has thirteen products used by more than a billion people (amazing!). Our work has had a tremendous impact in the world, and I have been lucky enough to collaborate and form friendships with many colleagues that I deeply admire, respect, and enjoy. It still brings me joy every time I see people out in the world using our products to find information, handle email, translate documents, watch videos, learn new things, navigate and understand the physical world, browse the web, use their phone, run large-scale computations on our infrastructure, ride in an autonomous vehicle, or perform complex tasks with the help of our AI systems. I hope you all share this sense of joy, because it is a shared accomplishment! Thank you to all of my colleagues at Google over many years! Now I'm excited to go start @DiscoLoopAI with my longtime friends and colleagues @Sanjay_Ghemawat, @OriolVinyalsML, and @quocleix. (Updated post: slightly redacted to not have some personal info)
