👏Dr. Devesha Kulkarni @devesha_k receives the prestigious @NIH Director's New Innovator Award. She is investigating how complement proteins help maintain intestinal health & support the gut's ability to repair itself after injury. She's a Goodman-Luskin Microbiome Center member.
Welcome back to LA, @tehhoyen! Delighted to have your curiosity, creativity, and enthusiasm for cool science in our GLMC community. 🥂 to many amazing discoveries ahead! 🚨 PSA: Don't miss joining this outstanding group!
Thrilled to be joining @dgsomucla and @UCLAGIHep as a member of the Goodman-Luskin Microbiome Center. We engineer the gut microbiome in vivo (and more!), both to understand basic biology and to develop new therapeutics. Recruiting techs, grad students, and postdocs. Come join me!
Congratulations, @gp_donaldson! This recognition is a wonderful testament to your innovative thinking and bold approach to science. Excited to see the discoveries and positive impact your work will inspire in the years ahead!
👏Dr. Donaldson @gp_donaldson received the prestigious @NIH Director's New Innovator Award. His lab is investigating Immunoglobulin A (IgA) & how it shapes the gut #microbiome and supports intestinal health. He is director of UCLA Goodman-Luskin Microbiome Center Probiotic Core.
We are thrilled and grateful to @NIH_ORWH & @NIDDK for continuing to support our SCORE Center’s research on sex differences in #IBS and also for supporting research studying sex differences & women’s health. 🙏

Congratulations to Sabeen Kazmi & co on their new study showing that gut microbes & microbial metabolites promote tau aggregation in a mouse model of tauopathy/AD. The work IDs microbiome changes linked to tau risk over time as potential tx targets nature.com/articles/s41467-0…
What a wonderful day of microbiome science at the Goodman-Luskin Microbiome Center symposium. So inspiring to see the breadth of innovative work happening across UCLA & connect with the talented community moving the science forward. Thanks to everyone who joined & contributed!
The third annual Goodman-Luskin Microbiome Center Symposium highlighted cutting-edge microbiome research and fostered collaboration among researchers, trainees and industry leaders to advance this dynamic field.

📣 We are recruiting postdocs to lead projects on mechanisms of microbiome-gut–brain signaling & microbial regulation of brain-body interactions in disease, w supportive clinical collaborators. Expertise in gut–brain, systems neuro, or neuroimmunology preferred. Please email 📧
Excited to share new work by Guli Agirman + co that identifies a direct mechanism linking gut microbial imidazole propionate to stress! 🧠🦠 Btw this image was made by Nano Banana Pro 🍌. First time I've gotten a model to accurately generate a science graphic
Importantly, these associations between high ImP, low hypothalamic activity, & maladaptive stress behaviors were reproduced in human subjects assessed for stress-related behavioral traits and by fMRI to measure hypothalamic reactivity to palatable food-related stimuli
This work underscores how a single microbial metabolite can have profound effects on host neurobiology through direct access to the brain. A huge congratulations to Guli and coauthors for unraveling this pathway from the gut lumen to the hypothalamus!
