🎨 Behind The Art: Games Under 5 Hours
At Plug In Digital, we like commissioning different artists to design original artworks for our Steam Events. This time, the key art for the ongoing GU5H event was made by 26-year old freelance artist Lucas Danthony (
@diainetiouaille). We've interviewed him to know more about his creative process. Let's lend him the mic! 🎤
🟢 What technique do you use for your posters? Some works in your portfolio have a style somewhat similar to that of the GU5H key art. What inspires you to give them that particular style?
➡️ For my posters, I try to mix up my techniques a bit; sometimes I start with paper and some sketches in my sketchbook. I then always use my iPad and Procreate to explore the design further and sometimes clean it up, and then, depending on the illustration and whether it needs to be vectorized (like for GU5H), I finalize everything in Illustrator. This style came from a painting I did about five years ago with the same idea of layering elements. I’m not really sure where the inspiration comes from, but I enjoy spending time intertwining the elements and finding the right balance... it’s like a puzzle!
🟢 You spend quite a bit of time in the streaming and esports scenes. Are you interested in video games in general, or do you prefer the event and competitive side of things?
➡️ I’d say my interest in streaming and esports stems from the time I spent watching YouTube as a teenager. I’d always followed it from a distance, until I had the opportunity to visit "Le QG" (the hangout of Mahdi Ba and Proze, two Quebec-based streamers). That experience connected me to that world (Proze was a member of the FaZe Clan at the time) so I became interested in the various teams and esports in general. After that, I was able to work more regularly in this field, particularly with Riot Games. As for video games, though, I’m not really an expert. I’ve always had a console at home, but I mostly played mainstream games (FIFA, 2K, GTA...).
🟢 What did you study in Canada?
➡️ I went to Canada for a two-year program leading to a diploma in computer graphics.
🟢 Where would you like to take your career, or in what field would you like to work?
➡️ Looking ahead, I'd like to keep up the momentum with different projects, get more involved in the world of sports, and, why not open a studio!
