I once sold a truck to a guy who called and agreed to pay full price as long as I brought it to the airport within the hour. It was incredibly sus, but my truck had been for sale for months, and I had grown desperate. So I went. It only got weirder. The moment I arrive he hops in the drivers seat for a test drive, and a run to the bank to get the money to buy it. He’s a freakishly large porcine fellow, adorned head to toe in dirty work clothes. He looked like Hagrid if he were an alcoholic with a the world’s most unionized construction job. We get to chatting on the drive. Work, life, conspiratorial ramblings, Donald Trump, Pakis. The usual, if you know this type of guy. I come to learn he needed to buy my truck to get home. He had bought a one way plane ticket to come buy a different one, but had been ghosted by the seller when he landed. He was stranded at an airport on the other side of the country with no other plan. So I thought, “well maybe I know the guy who ghosted him. Let me see if I can help.” I asked to see his phone to read his FB Marketplace message with the seller. He had been talking to some guy with Broken English and a vaguely middle eastern sounding name for several days now. The guy was selling an incredibly desirable truck for 30% below market. A virtually impossible deal. The vehicular equivalent of a horny singles in your area add on a porn site. He turned to me and said “y’know, his listing says the truck is about an hour from here, maybe I should go look for him.” I said “bro I’m looking at his profile, he has this same truck listed in every city in North America. The plate in the photos isn’t even from our state. This truck is spammed hundreds of times across marketplace.” To which he replied, “yeah I thought that was weird. I think it’s a glitch.” “No it’s not a glitch… you didn’t send him money did you?” I asked, fearing the answer. “Yeah I sent him a money, otherwise he was gonna sell it to another guy.” I winced. “how much?” “Five thousand bucks.” “……okay.” “Well let’s look him up, we have his name.” He replies confidently. “Look him up where?” I ask. “Facebook” “I’m looking at his Facebook. It’s not real.” Just then we arrive at the bank, he parks my 2500HD in the handicap spot at a 45 degree angle. I say maybe we should pick a different spot, he tells me he isn’t picky. We set up the wire transfer, he makes a disparaging remark about brown people to the teller. She frowns, she is brown. The money luckily still gets sent. And he takes off in the truck. Hours later he calls me from the middle of nowhere. He had decided to fuck with the aftermarket tuner while driving and bricked it. He was stranded. I don’t think all you xitter users realize just how difficult the modern world already is for an 85IQ person to navigate. With 53% of youtube shorts views now coming from AI content, these people are about to be thrust into a completely incomprehensible dream realm forever.

He was stuck at the airport. He could have bought a ticket home.

I think he was suffering the sunken cost fallacy and just felt the need to buy something to tell himself it wasn’t a waste. We’ve all been there.

Well in Communist Czechoslovakia everyone knew the TV was lying. Even though, they for God knows why forgot... It is now up to westerners to learn that the Internet lies too.

This is unironically very cool intel to hear from an actual Czech guy If I had to guess, I would think it stops mattering at a certain point. You just become so awash with falsehoods that you have no truth to even compare to. I would have assumed everyone under communism knew the tv lied, but they didn’t have a copy of Milton Friedman to cross compare. They were intellectually adrift, like the feeling you get reading 1984. It’s disorienting because nothing makes sense. Does this sound like a fair characterization?

My brother was about to send 3000 dollars to someone on Facebook marketplace for a Delorean and when I said “yeah that’s obviously a scam don’t do that” both my brother, my father, and my mother got fucking VITRIOLICLY mad at me, like insanely fuck ass mad, that I would suggest that. 20 minutes later “yeah that was a scam” my brother apologized my mom and dad didn’t. It was so odd, none of them are idiots, but they were fully willing to believe that some random grandma in the middle of nowhere was selling a vehicle worth over 100 grand for 3K because it didn’t have the title or some shit

~15% of the population have IQs of 85 or lower. These folks, no matter how conscientious, are not trainable. The US Army knew this when it lowered recruiting reqs during the VN war. About 100k recruits came to be called the "moron corps". Extrapolate that number. US pop ~350 million x 15% = ~50 million untrainable people. This is the primary reason UBI is inevitable as most of these folks will need support as the world becomes more complex. Immigrants from 3rd world countries where the culture permits and encourages marriage of 1st cousins can exhibit low IQ. Those immigrants will never be able to integrate into advanced cultures.

Interesting story, man. I genuinely feel bad for low IQ people. They really need guidance from someone smarter but the problem is that their friend circle is usually low IQ too. Very rare that a smart person will befriend a dumber person. Just different lifestyles.

Back in my married days, the wife and I were looking for a travel trailer and she was browsing FBM while I drove. She came across a really nice airstream for a really good price. I said, Send a message and see what's up and could we come see it, since it was less than an hour away. Message came back instantly with this song and dance about the trailer was in storage and she could get a friend to show us but we needed to send a deposit as she was out of the country and needed money to get back and on and on. My scadar (scamradar) went off immediately and I told her no way are we moving on that. I thought for a minute and told the wife to search for that same exact ad headline nationwide. Found the same ad in 7 other cities with exact the same text. A fool and his money are soon parted. The guy in the NYP story, "sold all his possessions" to buy a BUS ticket to go 1200 miles. Wait, wut? Holy moly, what a loser. I hate that we have worked so hard to secure our borders in the last 2 years, but we open up our homes to the third world every single day with the internet. We need to cut all the fiber going to all the shitholes of the world, NOW.

Almost all of this can be avoided by getting them off Facebook. There has been 7 people aged 60+ in my life, including my mother and stepfather in two incidents, that I know have been scammed in the past year and every single one was on Facebook. Whether an ad or marketplace

I got scammed for a couple hundred bucks by an emailer using AI to present himself as a marketing expert for indie books. This was before such scams became widely known. The emails were so professional and so well tailored to my situation that I was taken in, although if I had been a little more alert, I would’ve figured it out. It happens. But giving five grand as a down payment to a stranger on Facebook is … unwise. 🙁

I think low-IQ 3rd worlders actually have a low-trust society as an adaptation to being low-iq. Sure, some smart people exist in most low-IQ populations, but if one's heuristic is to not trust anything, it's easier for a low-iq person to survive around smart scammers

I once wanted to sell a motorcycle, and posted an ad to Craigslist. There were 4 replies. All 4 were from scammers. I chatted with one of them for a day until I realized that he was a scammer. He sent me emails supposedly from PayPal. I forwarded them to spoof@paypal.com and told this to him. "Screw you." "Hahaha." I ended up selling it to a dealership because I didn't want to deal with any more scammers.
