the mission
engineering manager reporting for duty 🫡
The ADHD dream career is being a professional "idea generator" who sits in a room for 1 hour, solves everyone else's complex workflow bottlenecks with chaotic lateral thinking, and then vanishes into thin air before anyone asks for a written report.

i keep telling people next year is going to be a bloodbath. DRAM prices will double again, at least.
SITUATION DETECTED: Amazon CEO Andy Jassy says that AWS capacity for 2026 is completely sold out, 2027 is largely sold out, and "a good chunk" of 2028 is already sold as well.

the problem with “compute on tap” is that rarely is everything else “on tap”
I have always hated AWS lambda. It is a psyop foisted upon the world by AWS solutions architects. The worst incident I’ve ever been a part of was caused by a bunch of people (understandably) messing up the connection pooling on their AWS lambdas and bringing down a core service.

~2 camps of thinking in addressing this: tank and quota. tankchads build a few services at such massive scale they laugh at pathetic attempts to overwhelm them. see: s3. quotacels insist on policing and enforcing limits everywhere as to contain any blast radius.

meta is the most elite tankchad shop. monolithic service hits a few gigantic systems that operate at request rates like 100B ops/s. people referring to systems as having “infinite capacity.” a beautiful illusion.

incredible how chatgpt can just spit out way better designs than this garbage

I left Silicon Valley 6 years ago Why? Because it's a monoculture The most extreme group think of any place on the planet Show up to a dinner party and everyone is in tech So what do they do? They start stack-ranking each other And it's a totally ordered set: being founder of co $100B market cap > founder of co with $50B market cap > managing partner of tier 1 venture firm > hired CEO of $50B public co > founder of $10B co > etc etc Pure toxicity that nerfs creativty And then as a corollary, people are especially afraid to speak truth to power as everyone knows their place in "The Hierarchy" Reject this nonsense. Stay weird. Think independently. Be honest with yourself. Have fun.

don’t worry, it’s just people liquidating their treasury positions in preparation for the anthropic ipo
🚨 THIS IS NOT LOOKING GOOD. Entire US bond yield curve is going parabolic. US01Y is at a 25-month high US02Y is at a 28-month high US05Y is at a 19-year high US10Y is at a 19-year high US20Y is also at a 22-year high US30Y is at a 19-year high Higher yields across the board mean higher borrowing costs for the government, businesses, and consumers, and that's bad news for both the economy and stocks.

“did you see the opus 5.5 release?” “it’s crazy man, it’s such a banger, looks like anthropic has retaken the mandate of heaven” “have you used it yet?” “no, have you?” “nope”

this will be a banger if it is done even remotely well. you’ll see clones of it roll out across the major cloud providers quickly. long overdue.
Cloudflare is working on K2, a durable event-stream primitive. It's a named, append-style log of "records" you produce to and consume from, with a configurable retention window, writable from a Worker binding or over HTTP. Basically Cloudflare Kafka.

new post: the senior engineer death spiral sunilpai.dev/posts/the-senio… a friend just started a big job and asked for some advice. so I braindumped a monologue about a super common failure mode I see with engineers and posted it here, hope it helps whoever it can.
