🧵THREAD: (1/7) Standard metabolic rate (SMR) is one of biology's most measured traits. We argue it isn't the baseline it's assumed to be, and discusses how sleep-wake cycles create a 'metabolic mosaic' that requires us to rethink how we interpret SMR. ecoevorxiv.org/repository/vi…
(6/7) The solution is to refine measurements: either integrate across sleep-wake cycles for daily estimates, or match measurement states to your biological question. Shifting from static to dynamic baselines will provide more meaningful estimates of organismal energetics.
(7/7) With Helena Norman, Daphne Cortese, @ScienceMunster, and Jan Lindstrom. What do you think – is it time to move beyond the fiction of constant baselines?
Now published in @MethodsEcolEvol, a practical how-to guide to running CTmax experiments. Should be worth a read if you do or plan to do CTmax experiments. Includes a fillable table (inspired by @shaunkillen) for reporting your the details of your work.

After unforeseen production delays, it was great to return the final proofs of our new edited book back to the production team today. Hopefully not too long to go before it comes out. A massive shout out again to co-editor @ulrikacandolin and our amazing chapter contributors 🙏
Our response to Rees et al. (doi.org/10.1242/jeb.246439), on measuring max metabolic rate in fish. We suggest that for some species, we may need to incorporate digestive metabolism to measure max MR. This may also vary within species across seasons.

New paper led by @daphnecortese & @ScienceMunster, links btwn cognition and metabolism vary with maze complexity, prob due to differences in exploration or memory. Context effects of maze design are key to consider in cognition studies! sciencedirect.com/science/ar…
New systematic review and meta-analysis, led by @ITiddy, on how climate stressors affect fish social behaviour. Inconsistent effects of temperature & CO2; hypoxia can decrease social cohesion. Overall, much more data needed for fully understanding effects. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…
Sleep occurs across animals, yet we know almost nothing about interactions among sleep, ecology, and environmental change. Our new systematic review led by Helena Norman reviews sleep in fish and avenues for future research in this fascinating field: journals.biologists.com/jeb/…
Briefly, we discuss how environmental factors may affect fish sleep, the benefits they receive from sleep, & the effects on behaviour & physiology when awake. It's amazing that we know SO little about this ubiquitous & vital component of fish biology in an environmental context.
