We're probably the first generation in 2,600 years that rarely touches its own money 🧐
It started around 600 BCE in a kingdom called Lydia, in modern-day Turkey. They melted down a gold-silver mix and stamped little lumps of it with a lion's head, and just like that, the coin was born.
That one idea ran the world for over two and a half millennia. Empires rose on it. Wars were fought over it. Pirates buried it.
And now, quietly, in our lifetime, it's fading out. Most of us haven't held our actual "money" in weeks. It lives on screens, and sits in an app.
2,600 years of coins and notes, and we're the generation watching it turn back into pure information.
Kinda wild to think about 🤯
