Bradley Barcola was posted mid-game at 36.22 km/h top speed. Now corrected to 34.8 km/h an hour or so post-match.

Would advise caution on using physical performance data published during or immediately after football matches. Kulusevski was initially credited with a top speed of 36.1 km/h yesterday, making him the third fastest player in the Premier League this season. That figure was revised to 29.2 km/h about an hour post-game. You’ll regularly see figures corrected in the hours following games. Worth allowing the data to settle before drawing conclusions or publishing rankings/take etc.

On one end a player could have 4 matches, 360 minutes & travel demands. On the other, a player is in a coniditioning block with no gametime. Every pre-season, professional footballers find themselves without a club, preparing for their next opportunity without knowing when it might come. The @PFA run a fantastic initiative in partnership with @p3rformhq, providing a support system through its free agent pre-season camp. The PFA pre-season camp gives free agents access to quality coaching, strength and conditioning, competitive fixtures and wellbeing support, helping them stay ready while they work towards their next contract. We were proud to support the camp again in 2026, where P3RFORM use our technology to benchmark players’ physical output against club pre-season demands and give coaches & players feedback on their sessions - the same way as a performance department would at a club. That data also stands as a body of evidence of the work players have put in, helping clubs understand how physically prepared a player is to join their squad. Really interesting insight from @waynerooney on the type of speed that can sometimes get overlooked in football. You’ll often hear coaches say that top speed is overrated. That football is mostly about being quick over short distances. It’s a fair point - most sprints in football are relatively short. Approximately 2-4 secs, over 10-20m. So acceleration, anticipation and timing are hugely important. But Rooney’s point is equally true - give genuinely fast players 30–40m to open up and top end speed is a massive plus. The counter-attack goal against Arsenal in 09/10 is a brilliant example. Rooney starts from deep, sprints about 50m and has the ability to maintain his speed and get on the end of the pass. In the current Premier League era, that ability is particularly valuable in a game increasingly full of transitions. For both attackers and defenders. Manchester United used to publish their players’ top speeds, and Rooney was regularly right up there at or above 35 km/h. There’s another reason developing top speed matters too: speed reserve. Imagine two players: Player A max speed: 36 km/h Player B max speed: 31 km/h At 25 km/h, Player A is at 69% of their maximum speed. Player B is already at 81%. So the same absolute running speed represents a very different relative speed demand for each player. That’s just one more reason maximal speed matters beyond simply being able to win a foot race. Raise your ceiling and you increase the speed you have in reserve.

This is a good example of how physical data can be often misused in football. This post has 1.1m views and tentatively insinuates that because Manchester United don’t sprint much out of possession, that’s a bad thing. Under Michael Carrick, United generally defend in a mid-block. They will naturally accumulate less OOP sprint distance than a Bournemouth side whose defensive model involves pressing much more aggressively. Look at the bottom-left quadrant. Many of those teams use structures designed to control space rather than constantly press at high intensity. It’s about running at the right moments. Physical output is generally a consequence of how you play. Or at least, how you want to play. Additionally, after the longest World Cup in history, it's another long season ahead for clubs and players in European competitions, and who go deep in domestic cups. Managing the season physically will be key.

For Chelsea, only Chavarría and Henderson covered more distance than Rogers (11.7km) In terms of high speed running (>19.8 km/h), only Chavarría covered more. Rogers hit 830m. Using number of sprints in isolation to compare the “work rate” of two players removes a huge amount of context. Rogers did perform fewer sprints, but still covered considerably more high-speed distance and total distance. Who had more accels/decels? Did tactical commands play a part in one doing more HSR and one running more sprints? That’s exactly why one metric shouldn’t be used on its own to conclude that another player “works harder”. As physical data becomes a bigger part of fan analysis, greater care should be taken when using isolated metrics to criticise players. Without knowing the tactical role, position and match context behind the numbers, a significant part of the picture could be missed.
