One thing that I am seeing that is utterly ridiculous in the RPG space is people who are saying that resolving a situation through role-play or situationally ignoring a rule is not "playing the game". A lot of times it is tied to hatred of RPG shows like Critical Role.
Regardless of your thoughts on those shows, narrative play and selective use of rules has been a part of RPG since the beginning. Dave Arneson, who introduced the concept of RPGs to Gary Gygax, apparently tended towards more narrative play.
Nearly every GM's guide or GM's section that I have ever read has basically said for a GM to use, modify, or ignore any they want for their game. That is a part of a game.
