On the surface, my second year @the_IAS mirrored the first: four new papers (which I recap below), an amazing time overall, and a summer holiday hiking volcanoes. In reality, the arrival of AI changed everything. The future seems both exciting and unpredictable! (1/5).

A decade ago, I gave a talk at @the_IAS on some conjectures occurring in my work with Kei Nakamura on the arithmetic of hyperbolic 3-manifolds and reflection groups (the occasion was Bourgain's birthday conference: piped.video/c6iIxG7RQQs?si=i-WA…). Last week, we (with Daniel Allcock, Pat Devlin, Anna Felikson, and Ian Whitehead) posted to the arxiv a solution to this conjecture: arxiv.org/abs/2609.05349 (You may not have noticed it last week, due to some "other" math news... In fact, no AI was used in the proofs or writing of our text, though I did iterate with Claude to make the pictures.) It's *very* satisfying to work on a problem for a decade and finally see it through (and a little sad that that might be more rare these days...). A big breakthrough came during a meeting at @AIMathematics in 2022 (which itself was postponed from its original date: March 2020, due to some virus or something !!...), and it took us ~4 years to complete the details... Hope you enjoy!
