Helping teachers teach, automating the rest

K-3 teachers in a 2018 national survey reported 89 minutes a day on English and 57 on math. A 32-minute gap each day. Over a 180-day year, about 96 hours. Across K-3, about 384 hours. Alabama, Georgia, Indiana and Maryland have passed 60-minute daily math rules. Is 60 enough?

Her seniors' Macbeth essays all came back sounding like the same writer. So a San Francisco English department head stopped assigning take-home essays. Now they write in class, by hand. Paper fixed the honesty problem. The practice problem is still there.

88% of Australian teachers in a survey said students learn better in their preferred "learning style." Just 30% disagreed that discovery learning beats explicit instruction. Average on 10 science of learning questions: 4.53. A training problem more than a teacher problem.

More than half the NYC Council wants a paper option back for grades 3-8 state tests (Chalkbeat, Oct 9). The state says screens score faster. For third graders I'll take slower. Paper or screen? chalkbeat.org/newyork/2026/1…

Stanford's SCALE team went through 800+ papers on AI in K-12. Only 20 had strong causal evidence (EdWeek, Oct 15). Districts are deciding anyway. I'd run AI pilots against a comparison group. Does your district? edweek.org/technology/we-nee…

Berryessa Union closed three elementary schools, then put tiny toilets in one for 150 babies and preschoolers, betting they stay for TK (The 74, Oct 21). I'd promise them a TK seat. Berryessa hasn't the74million.org/zero2eight/…

A Clarksdale principal ran a "days of peace" countdown. Her middle schoolers hit 85 days without a fight and math proficiency nearly tripled (Mississippi Today, Oct 15). I'd put the 85 on the report card. mississippitoday.org/2026/10…

MetaMetrics had four chatbots estimate the Lexile of 1,807 passages. 3% matched the official measure (The 74, Oct 13). They built Lexile, so grain of salt, but I wouldn't pick a kid's book off a chatbot number the74million.org/article/ai-…

Bonnie Grossen told Zig Engelmann that 28 of 30 kids got a concept. He said it didn't work (APM Reports, Oct 15). I'd rewrite for the other two before moving on. apmreports.org/story/2026/10…

New Gallup poll out Oct 14. Of K-12 educators who used AI last school year, 13% said it gave them a lot more time and 51% said somewhat more. I'd need that 13 way higher before calling AI a time saver news.gallup.com/poll/715364/…

About 1 in 4 kids whose 7th grade scores had them ready for algebra weren't taking it in 8th (NWEA study, The 74, Oct 9). Some counted themselves out, some got steered away. I'd enroll every kid who qualifies and let families opt out the74million.org/article/mor…

A dad asked Tahoe Truckee for a screen-free track. They posted device minutes instead: 70 to 80 a day, 36 in elementary, Docs and Classroom on top (District Administration, Oct 1). I'd take the folder over "thoughtful use." Would your board open theirs? districtadministration.com/a…

Fort Worth kids wrote an open letter on scripted lessons under the state takeover. Errors in the guides. Teachers reading decks. A 6th grader said they're just copying words (NBC5, Oct 6). I'd rather scrap a bad slide mid-period than push it. Would you? nbcdfw.com/news/local/fort-w…
