distance is a factor but the reason orsted didnt use disturb magic on rudeus’s nuclear fireball is because it wouldn’t completely neutralize the attack and would harm everyone around except orsted. rudeus used melded magic to fuse his fire magic which he was imagining to be a nuclear (fission/fusion) explosion and he was compressing the air using wind magic to create a vacuum so heat doesn’t escape. Disturb magic would only work on one of them at a time and the moment one of them was out of the equation the other would instantly detonate, also with the sheer volume of mana he was putting into it too; that’s why he resorted to summoning a Wyrmgate and even that was barely enough to tank the attack
