Hey, @HeidiPriebe1 and I are running a writer's retreat just after the New Year. We'll talk about Zen, creativity, and maintaining the discipline and structure needed to keep a daily writing practice. We'd love to have you!

Before stepping into the ring, Cus D’Amato would repeat to Mike Tyson that you don’t exist, only the task exists. The moment you internalize what this really means, all self-doubt simply ceases to exist, because there’s no longer a self to doubt. What’s left is total immersion in the task, which is what the flow state actually is, where there’s no “you” left to interfere, and action arises by itself, like second nature, faster than conscious thought, through the sheer genius of your unconscious mind.
No exaggeration, this guy might be the best interview in pro sports right now

Also, Billy is a great depiction of someone we'd call "sociopathic" but not, I think, personality disordered. In the culture he's from, he's behaving in a rational and defensible, even moral way, even though it looks narcissistic and awful from the outside. He is clearly selfish and controlling and also clearly a caring, protective husband and father who is responding badly to stress that Nathan is introducing with his own Oedipal shit. I did not like Billy at all but I found him more sympathetic than Nathan, if less than Liz. It is perhaps news to a lot of people watching that "narcissists" and "psychopaths" are human beings with rich, infinite interiority, just like everyone else! Elizabeth's personality is organized around dissociation, which makes her "autistic," in the current colloquial sense, not the proper medical understanding of it, and she is clearly "personality disordered", if you consider BPD a PD at all (let's not litigate this here.) She has the pseudo-hysterical dissociative relationship to psychopathy that you often see in trauma victims (pathological lying, in particular, is common in this set of people.) In order to have a stable personality, she has to conform to a rigid set of orientations that bends her about 15 degrees against the flow of reality. In order to conform to those orientations, she has to pretend that things in reality aren't connected, which actually are (this is dis-sociation properly understood.) So when she's speaking, I think what she's doing is intuiting at an almost superhuman level what the other person wants her to be, and then becoming that, and fully believing in the moment that she is in fact that. It could also be that in the moment that she's defending herself, she also fully believes that she's innocent, even if a part of her remains aware of it under the surface. The sheer volume of chirality in her facial expression - the constant mask of fear that lies under the supernormative transparency, the kindness of her giant eyes juxtaposed with the searching, strategic, hunter's precision, the frozen smile that stays in place when tears are streaming down her face - this is a person who absolutely can not allow herself to come in contact with what is happening internally, or she will fall into the disconnected pieces that actually make her up. I could write a thesis on this movie. Really fun and fantastic, disturbing all throughout but utterly fascinating. Oscar-worthy for sure.

Much more to say but don't want to spoil it if people haven't seen it. The film is ostensibly about Liz Holmes but it's just as much about two men competing in her bizarre psychosexual reality distortion field. And only Nathan is aware of it, and there's no way to know whether he is engineering and manipulating it for profit - it very much seems that way toward the end. They make a huge deal about Billy controlling Liz's image and whether or not Billy will profit from the documentary, when Nathan and Amanda are right there controlling everyone's image and profiting from the documentary

A girl just said she tried to get rejected 1000 times in 2025 and ended up being cast in plays, winning pageants, securing hella paid brand deals, and appearing in commercials. This is your sign to chase rejection to the point of "accidental" success. You'll be surprised.

Reminder not having a long commute is one of the biggest life upgrades. You never normalize against this, like you would a very good or very bad event (the commuting paradox, described in the Scandinavian Journal of Economics). Moving closer to work or going remote is worth it

The most psychopathic thing that happens in You Can See Everything is when Nathan decisively wins the frame control free-for-all by suggesting he lost

Try to praise the mutilated world. Remember June's long days, and wild strawberries, drops of rosé wine. The nettles that methodically overgrow the abandoned homesteads of exiles. You must praise the mutilated world. You watched the stylish yachts and ships; one of them had a long trip ahead of it, while salty oblivion awaited others. You've seen the refugees going nowhere, you've heard the executioners sing joyfully. You should praise the mutilated world. Remember the moments when we were together in a white room and the curtain fluttered. Return in thought to the concert where music flared. You gathered acorns in the park in autumn and leaves eddied over the earth's scars. Praise the mutilated world and the gray feather a thrush lost, and the gentle light that strays and vanishes and returns.

The funny thing about disenchanted rationalism is that people adopt it for its predictive power, but the adoption of it famously, reliably predicts a brutally unhappy life Almost like using myth and allegory to point to this phenomenon is sacred to people for a reason

For those who think a $1700 life changing retreat (teacher pay included) is for millionaaihes and billionaaihes, Wystan Bryant Scott is offering a secret online jhana retreat for $250 (teacher pay not included). I'm not making this up. Lineages will be credited!

The reality is that gentleness and ferocity are both important. A competent and healthy person is capable of both, when the situation warrants it. Handling a newborn baby? That's when you should be gentle. Handling a burglar who is trying to break down your front door? That's when you should be ferocious.
There's an old version of me that saw gentleness as weakness, and scorned people who tried to help me. I bounced off therapists and priests until I met my mentor, who just straight up intellectually and morally defeated me I needed my ass kicked before I could receive kindness
