France offers millions of euros to MMSS but refuses to pay independence debt [to
#Haiti]
France recently announced an additional contribution of €4.5 million to the Multinational Mission for Security Support in Haiti (MMSS), bringing its total support to €9.5 million. This funding aims to support international efforts to improve security in a country still plagued by violence fueled by armed gangs. With this new assistance, total international contributions to the MMSS now exceed $100 million.
However, this aid comes in a tense climate, exacerbated by recent statements by French President Emmanuel Macron. Macron called some Haitian leaders “idiots,” a remark that quickly angered many Haitians. The French president’s remarks are seen by many as an insult to the entire Haitian nation, and France has yet to issue an official apology for these statements.
For some, this financial aid seems paltry in light of France's colonial past with Haiti. In 1825, Haiti was forced to pay a heavy indemnity to France to obtain diplomatic recognition, a debt that deeply affected the country's finances. Today, several voices are speaking out, believing that France must repair the historical wrongs by fully repaying the independence debt.
As the international community continues to support Haiti in the face of insecurity, tensions between the two nations highlight the challenges of international cooperation. Haitians are demanding recognition of past injustices, hoping for a true partnership based on mutual respect.
